There is absolutely no problem with flying into India with a one-way ticket. You won't be asked anything about your tickets when applying for your visa--and if you were, there's nothing wrong with a one-way ticket! Many people here, including myself, have flown one-way to India and purchased an outbound ticket later.

Isn't it cheaper to purchase an open return ticket when you get your first ticket? Providing it's within a time period where you can lock in a ticket price

I looked at buying a one-way for my current trip, as I expect to be able to extend my visa due to marriage. It turned out to be about three times the cost of a return!

They do not want to see your tickets when you get your visa. They do not ask for them when you enter the country. Whichever method you choose, don't worry about this.

The Indian embassy in Sweden does ask for the ticket when you send in for your visa, but in reality they don't care if you actually include it or not.
