-edited-

Are the signs of affection prohibited in public or what?
Or was the local policeofficer just bored inside his officercostume on that hot day, and not having anything better to do than being nasty towards a local?

I know they might fine even westeners if they smoke on the street, but c'mon, there can't be anything wrong with sitting in each other's lap, can there?
Fine for hugging, in the historical state of free love and hippies?

There have been cases of rapes, molestation and robbery at Miramar beach. Thieves target couples sitting in quiet secluded places and rob them at knife point. Thats why the police have to take such drastic steps, specially at Miramar beach.

Regards

Just a grumpy copper.......no big deal and hardly representative of the general Goa experience.

I was told not be out late at night by a guy with a couple of pips on his shoulder. This was about 1.30am in Palolem so he may have had a point,

Strangely two years later I come across him again, after a great night out at Dreamcatchers. My highland mate was twelve sheets to the wind and as I hurried bye he blagged a lift to the other end of the Beach in the police jeep.
I only learned of this a few days afterwards as when I heard him asking for a lift my step quickened!!
On a lighter note the Goa police patrol is the photo to get.

Two uniformed officers walking down the beach hand in hand!!

Absolutely true Goandentist - for further information, look on the British Embassy Website under Foreign Travel. It lists SOME of the rapes and muggings there - but by no means all. There are warnings on the website too, for people visiting Goa.

Mind you - if people are getting fined for smoking on the street, is this a new thing? I know for a fact that my dearly beloved sister who is too fond of a drink and smokes like a chimney, and has been going to Goa every year for a month for the past ten years, is OFTEN found wandering around in either the day or night time hours a little worse for wear and ALWAYS with a fag - never goes anywhere without one.......though I do love 'er to bits too

Smoking actions are new and most welcome. In any case other countries don't exist to service the tourist crowd. I think travellers should pay some attention to local attitudes..

I don't understand how such drastic step as making a couple sit on a bench like strangers would prevent thieves.
I wouldn't exactly call it "drastic"... Is it really such a big deal?

Tell me if you know the culture better.

Perhaps the policeman was given a "target" as to the number of couples he warned in a day !

Its the culture police thingy... My wife and myself have been told the same by cops in many parks as we normally enjoy lying down like that.

We just consider that as an aberration and respect the warning in places where we receive it (4 instances). But we continue the same in a new place, cuz travel is also about enjoying toghetherness when you are travelling as a couple! By the way we are an Indian couple !

You know it as well that if something like this was to happen here, in north, (allthough it won't), it would be made a VERY BIG deal.
Of course, but you can't expect India to be like Scandinavia.

I'm not.

(Some say Goa is not the same as India.)

Nudity on the beaches is prohibited as per the law. Of course when the Tourist Police is not on the beach it is possible to sunbathe nude. There have been cases of Europeans being fined for exposing themselves.
