Hello all Indiamikers,

We need your help please. Our friend has been missing since Monday 31 March round 09.00 am. Last known location is Margao train station where a taxi driver dropped her off. She was supposed to take the train to Mumbai and fly back to America but we know she got on another train and did not take her flight.

xxx US Citizen, 44 years old, mostly wears shorts or short skirts and never wears any shoes or flipflops at all. Often wears big sunglasses. At the moment her speech is somewhat slurred because she is taking unprescribed meds, . She does not speak any Indian languages or anything other than English.

She does sometimes pick up her phone so we know she is alive but she refuses to say where she is (which could be anywhere in India by now) we have put credit on her phone but she also refuses to call anyone. Her visa isn't a problem -as an American citizen she has the 10-year visa which is still valid for a couple of years- but money is. Her ticket to the US is now void and she has no money at all.

We know she is seriously confused and we need to locate her so we can send someone from Goa to pick her up and make sure she gets the professional help she needs. The US embassy has been notified but they can (or will) do nothing at the moment. Goa Police has been notified but like us, they cannot do anything since we don't know where she is.

Me and her boyfriend are doing this from Europe but we do have people in Goa to go and get her as soon as we know where she is.

If you see her, please phone one of our friends in Goa, at any time of day or night:

Is she suffering with some medical/psychological condition? Getting credit on phone wont be a problem at all for her.Being a foreigner, she will get all the help in this matter from anyone(strangers including) she gets in touch with.

Police can trace her anywhere in India.Due to recent incidents in India, I am sure police will be extra cautious, especially in cases where foreigners are involved. If you know any influential locals, police will put extra efforts.

Hi Prince09,

We know she got on another train because she told us. We do not know which train and where she is now. She is seriously confused and needs urgent medical attention, for her mind, not her body. She will not ask for help because she does not think she needs it. And although the police know, where do they start... India is big! Someone will go to Margao train station today and question the staff there, but since so many western tourists get on and off there the chance of them remembering her is slim.

How do you know that? Did someone see her board another train, and if so, to where?

Does she travel barefoot?

At the moment her speech is somewhat slurred because she is taking unprescribed meds, probably Tramadol. She does not speak any Indian languages or anything other than English.
Is she taking any other medication, including anti-malarial tabs, containing Lariam (mefloquine)? Does she take recreational drugs?

Presumably she is still charging her phone, which is good news. Is this behaviour totally uncharacteristic of her?

Although she may have a 10-year multiple entry visa, each stay should not be more than 180 days. How long has she been in India on this trip?

Sorry for so many questions but your answers would help someone reading this to suggest some help.

If she has a cell phone with an Indian number that is still on (may not have credit, just on), the police can locate it with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Margao rail station should have CCTV cameras and if she missed he train to Mumbai and took another (to Mumbai or elsewhere) it is likely that we can find out which train she took. That should give a general direction at least if not the destination itself.

It appears like she is deliberately trying to wander/escape or may be due to her condition. It's a bit hard to trace people like these but not impossible. Will take time for sure. I know a similar case and we were able to trace her after a few months, in a totally different direction/location.

Hi Narendra.d,

We will put credit on the phone and we will ask Goa Police to track it. CCTV is a good idea, thank you, will pass it on to the people in Goa.

Yes, that's exactly the case here but we hope to find her a bit sooner.

You can't do this from afar. Someone has to be on the ground in Goa and needs to push the police and Home ministry to pull out all the stops for locating her via her mobile before the phone signal disappears. If she does not want to be found she will get rid of it soon. After that it will be much harder to find her.

Yes, always, also in cities.

No, she has been bad before but not to this extent which is why we are so worried.

Someone from her family and friends needs to get out there and use consular clout to address this ASAP. The longer they leave it the harder it will get. And they will need funds. It would help to find out which train she took but that will take coordination from the police and the Rail authorities, and time is ticking away.

Why should police chase an adult who seems to have gone somewhere on her own?
I understand the how anxious it makes her loved ones but is it really a case for the police when she has not been kidnapped or being influenced/cheated by someone unscrupulous.
Specially in the election season when law enforcement(both state and central) is badly stretched everywhere?
