If they fit meters, prices will go down!

Dont Be afraid to catch the bus we went from candolin to colva price quoted by taxis 1000 rps one way time 1 hour
By bus it was great candolin to panjim 30 mins 8rps then to margoa non stop direct bus service 1 hour 17rps. Off to colva 15 mins 7rps total for the two of us 64rps so the money we saved payed for our stay of 2 days in colva
also the tut tuts are really good if just going somewhere local
the only time ill use a taxi from now on is two and from the airport
p.s just got back from goa and booked for 4 weeks same time next year

Just as a matter of interest as I am going to Colva in a few weeks time. generally how much do you pay for a tuk-tuk doing a local journey. Some examples of other fares would be helpful, as well. regards, Pete

most of the taxis that crop up during tourist season are not official taxis. Almost every local who own a vehicle in goa, starts running it as a taxi, especially during new years. I doubt, if they will even have these so called meters. And after tourists have waited for 20 minutes for a taxi, I doubt if they will complain when they are ripped off.

If youve ever been to goa then you know that everyother person you see is a taxi driver there a real pain in the ass and there to getting to be greedy, tut tuts are less than half the price and less hassle as unlike the taxi drivers most of them dont pester you .God the amount of times in a day you get offered a txai is stupid even when you get out a taxi theres another taxi driver wating to jump on you i say stuff em and then they might think again

Whoa! That's an increase if ever there was one. Rather unfounded, I would think, considering there hasn't been a hike in fuel prices that would justify the hike.

Even strager, considering that the main tourist season is over -- wonder what brought the hike on.. any ideas?

tuk-tuk from Madgaon new bus stand to colva costed me 70Rs at 6AM. to return i paid 80Rs because autos in resorts are more costly and their drivers are more greedy. short drive from benaulim bus stand to senarbatim (maybe 1 km) costs 40Rs with bargaining, quoted price - 50Rs.
Generally drivers in Goa go crazy when you try to bargain their absurd price down even for 10Rs. one such angry old autorickshaw driver is working in benaulim. it's much better to hire bike or cycle.
i don't believe in published earlier official rates for taxis - taxis are unmetered and even strict orders from Willy de Souza did not stop drivers from disobeyance. i don't know why goanese government did not try to solve this problem simply revoking licences from offending drivers. for example delhi government is more strict and cases of misbehaviour and huge overcharging become rare on delhi streets not mentioning generally cheaper fares.
i paid to one driver 300Rs to get from Calangute to Thivim railway station (around 20km) and he first asked me when is my train. When he got to know that i have possibly one hour left he began unpolitely (without even calling me sir or something like this) insist on some visits to handicrafts shops and emporiums on the way. His argumentation was simple - he needs money and coupons. i was shocked - he even did not help me to put my suitcase in his car and what he wants from me...but general rudeness is very much characteristic of all south indians and goanese are not exception. when i refused finally to visit them he became more gloomy than in the beginning simply delivered me to railway station and looked from his seat how i tried to collect my heavy suitcase from the back.

Taxis in the south are notorious for troublemaking. There are some good ones.
I know some drivers who look after you and don't try and rip everyone off.
They get good business. Trouble is one good rip off can give a driver a week's money.
I was chatting to some at the beach recently and one complained that Russians try to bargain the price after the trip.
I said "try turning a meter on"....SILENCE
Last week I took some friends for a boat trip to Cavelossim. There were 6 of us so we had a Qualis.
The driver waited. In the evening we were waiting for him to pick us up.
Another driver stopped and said our driver couldn't make it and he and his friend would take us.
I didn't believe him. I didn't have our driver's number so I called a friend who contacted him.
He was waiting up the road and came down within minutes.
We all got in but before we pulled away, the cheating, lying, bastard driver who tried to take us asked him why he was working his area.
Another friend was in a hotel in Cavelossim and his friend came to pick him up.
The taxi drivers wouldn't let them out. The manager and the security disappeared, so they had to crash the gates to get out.
That's the Cavelossim Mafia for you.

agreed, many Russians are simply jumping in the vehicles and then in the end ask how much. Well, with some of them who has good phisics drivers are not ready to quote absurd rates. with some of Russians they can do it.
Anyway I was told that generally Russian tourists spend more many than western backpackers in Goa and they are cheated by money hungry Goans everywhere. Why? Just come to one of the so called Black sea resorts to understand.
Anyway, many Goans are infected by western disease called rat race and became very rude and greedy. For example I went out to buy a bottle of water in Calangut. woman seller asked me rudely what do you want. I said 2 packets of Navy cut and bottle of water. She sold me them at 27Rs per packet and at 15Rs per water. When I wondered at this she said - yes yes we need your money. more money as possible.
- and what do you do then with this money?
- spend them. they are coming and going.
- why you could not talk with visitors politely? i don't mind if you overcharge me but you could be more friendly and respect visitors.
- silence.
in neighbouring cafe an old man from manchester tries to struggle with slow season and indian buraucracy. he bought cafe but cannot register in his name. he got only one year business visa and very curious about mine long term. he said about indians - at first i thought almost all of them fine and very polite. i visited goa first 10 (or maybe 20) years ago. but now i think only 70% of them good and 30% are spoilt. they never call men elder than they sir or mister. crime is on the rise - his wife when she was walking on main road in calangute lost her handbag snatched by local youth. many of them are unemployed and think easy ways are good ways.
