New boy on the block
Hi all, have just joined this fantastic community after lurking for months. I have gained the answers to load of questions already, but here are a few more. As you can probably tell from my username, im entering and yearning for new experiences that differ from what i have been doing for the last 30 years. Can i expect to come to Goa, and find a base ,mix with locals and expats, and live on about £600 a month?. I work for myself ,so i was planning on staying for up to 5 months at a time, then going back to England. Do the mid-range hotels do deals for long stayers?. Any helpful replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there midlifecrisis.
Another newbie here, just joined after similar lurking. Also hoping to find something different after 30 plus years of the daily grind. General comments. I've spent a lot of time reading information on various forums, not just here. But this is definitely the best. Incredible how many people plan to move to Goa without doing any homework. One woman (not on this forum) announced she had "bought" an apartment on the internet without even being to Goa! Good luck - and hope your plans work out. |

Welcome both,
I moved from Bangalore to Goa a year ago. I love it here but it is not easy. Before three years in Bangalore, I lived eight years in Delhi and found both cities easier than Goa. Foreigners have not a good reputation in Goa (and quite understandably so) and you notice that with every interaction and at every level. Still think this is an incredible place to live, especially if you are fond of nature. Goa is definitly worth to give a try but please beforehand read: To Those Dreaming About Moving To India Feel free to let me know any Goa specific questions. |

Thanks very much for the welcome.
Birds - read that thread. Unbelievable that people can just abandon animals to fend from themselves, but know it must happen. Are there many animal rescue centres in Goa? Just booked my two dogs into their usual kennels while we're away. Costs more pn than it will for us - and they will probably be living in more luxury! Cheers |

There are a good number of animal rescue centers but like everywhere else they are plagued by problems such as: too many animals, people bringing in pedigree dogs for veterinary care instead of going to a normal vet, too little qualified staff especially in the management and organisation, viruses, etc.
The most well known one is in North Goa and is called Animal Tracks from International Animal Rescue (http://www.iar.org.uk/india/goa.shtml). Also in North Goa there is the GSPC in Porvorim (no kill policy) and Poor Darlings in Pilerne (only for cats). In South Goa there are also various but I know not so much about them. Besides the rescue centres there are also kennels where pets can stay for a limited time during holidays or other absence of their owners. As such there are sufficient facilities but due to poor organisation, unwillingness of people to sterilise dogs & cats and heartless people leaving their pets behind, there is still a huge animal problem especially with dogs. |

Welcome aboard midlifecrises; sounds like a name right out of Asterix
. 600 Pounds should be enough but then again it depends on your lifestyle. Maybe you can check out some serviced apartments too. As has been said on this site before, go to Goa, look around and then negotiate because internet prices can be quite high and location unsuitable.Welcome to IM sweet-thursday ![]()

sweet-thursday, it happens commonly enough in London --- so it's going to happen in India, surely.
![]() One question I used to hear from my cat friends: why buy a kitten from a pet shop, when just asking around will reveal litters looking for homes? An aside... I saw a dog yesterday with a yellow backside. I find it hard to believe that it has the habit like some women putting turmeric on their faces --- but after a while I thought, maybe the dog has been neutered? Birds? |

The paint is a bit annoying for the dog as it tends to result in hair loss, sometimes followed by infections but taking into account limited resources it is a good method. It would be even better if they would use paint that disolves in water. By the way, in most Indian cities the animal rescue centrer also cut a small piece out of the ear of the dogs once it is sterilised. That way they will not pick up the same dog again and the general public can be a bit more reassured because a sterilised dog is also always vacinated against rabies . |

Midlifecrisis, If you post on any Specific Place in Goa, you are interested to stay in, then the posters will get a better idea and can offer suggestions, based on that. Imho, with that budget, you will do just fine.
Welcome to IM and Happy Lurking. ![]() |
