Just to clarify, I have no experience of Goa, I just assumed this was what the reference about safety was about. Doesn't hurt to repeat to prospective visitors that it pays to keep an eye on yourself in the water I guess. I consider myself a fair swimmer but I nearly drowned twice in Varkala, the second time being just to convince myself that it had been dangerous the first time around. That should tell you something about a young solo traveller's intelligent mindset

I can live with a few riptides, I thought someone was going to say those darn saltwater crocs keep coming out of the marshes, but it's OK because the sharks generally eat anything under 3m.
