Hello everybody.

I am planning to go Goa in end of FEB.Taking my trusty EECO CNG.
Need the info on following queries.

1)What is the best route for MUMBAI to GOA? The main requirement is CNG availability.I know i can refill CNG in Pune.On that will go till Kolhapur. Is CNG stations are available at belgaum on NH4?
If yes then whats best route from Belgaum to Panji.

2)Is there any permit required to take Private car in GOA.My car is Maharashtra passing.I will be there in Goa for 5 days.

Thanks in advance

The best route would be Pune - Kolhapur - Nipani ( just up the ghat where the windmills begin- 50 kms or so from Kolhapur, you need to take a right) and then Azra - Amboli & down to Sawantwadi. Panajim would be approx 60kms from there.... am not too sure as to why your going through Belgaum.
MH vehicles is not a problem unless of course if its a tourist vehicle, then you would have to pull up somewhere before Panjim where they check all the papers.. i can recall the name of the place. They might stop you on the return especially the MH cops as they want their share of Pegs/baksheesh...whatever

I recently did this whole trip on my bicycle, took the coastal route which was very scenic and fun filled. Getting CNG would be tough on this route and hence you may have to take NH17 but that's no fun

You essentially have 2 options :

1) Via NH 17 (coastal highway). The pros are scenic drive while the cons are that it is an undivided 2 lane road with lesser pit stops.

2) NH4 via Pune & Kolhapur. The pros are that it is a 4 lane divided highway till you turn off to cross the ghats. Certainly ranked better than option 1 if you wish to have less tense driving and also affords you a chance to cross the ghats where the views are awesome.

Continuing with option 2, you can leave NH4 (Pune - Bangalore Highway) to cross the western ghats into Goa at :

a) Kolhapur (via Phonda. Not used by me but have heard that it is one hell of a scenic ghat crossing)

b) Nipani (via Amboli)

c) Sankeshwar (via Amboli)

d) Belgaum (via Amboli but does not make sense to first go south till Belgaum and then northwards to Amboli)

e) Belgaum (via Londa & Ponda but not suitable if your destination is North Goa)

Please do visit www.team-bhp.com, www.bcmtouring.com and search those forums for threads on these routes to get the latest status of the roads.

These forums may even help you identify nice pit stops and also fueling stations enroute.

There is absolutely no issue in driving any privately registered MH vehicle into Goa as the vehicle registrations are valid on an all India basis.
Do keep the fuel, toll and parking slips (as they serve as evidence to prove that you just came in and are not resident there).
Do also keep all the documents with you as mandated by the law like RC, driving licence, etc.
Keep all originals in a purse with you at all times and a photostatic copy with the vehicle.
Do keep the duplicate key in the pocket of the co driver at all times (never in the vehicle) so that if you lock your keys in the car, you do not get stranded.
Do ensure that your PUC (pollution) is up to date and recent.
Do NOT (repeating NOT) exceed speed limits under any circumstances with the state of Goa as the police is very strict about it.

Yup there is a coastal route, which goes through interiors, Hence you cannot do this route ( the one that i did) on a 4 wheeler, but this surely can be done on a 2 wheeler, in 3 days
Route that normally bikers take:
1] Day 1 - Mumbai to Diveaghar
2] Day 2 - Diveaghar to Ganpatiphule
3] Day 3 - GanpatiPhule to Goa.

Since did this route on my bicycle i cannot tell how how many kms u cover each day, but its approx 175kms.

I did this whole route in a fun filled 8 day journey.

Hope this helps

Thank you all for the reply.Since i am going to stay in south goa (Margaon) i was planning to take Belgaum route (Belgaum-khanapur-londa-margaon).I have also heard that belgaum has few CNG stations so i can save some money on fuel.If anybody traveled that route please confirm about CNG pumps are really there or not. This info will also be useful to other travelers who are having CNG vehicals taking this route.
Thanks
