Malaria dengue chikungumya - Goa a mess

Navhind Times today reports an increase to 3345 known cases of malaria in Goa up to September 2006. They have no figures on dengue or chikungumya, and are playing down the situation cause the Charters arrive this week, but placing quarter page health warnings in the newspapers. The true figures will be significantly greater.

I know of 2 foreigners who got dengue last year, and ended up with prolonged stays in tropical disease units of their own countries. Of course, there is no prophylactic, and dengue is most usually fatal on the second infection.

Migrant labourers are supposed to carry Health Cards, and the State government is supposed to enforce inspection of building sites, but of course doesn't. However, not all infection can be blamed on the labourers. Leaking septic tanks and polluted wells are major factors in the increase in virus carrying mosquitoes.

Once again, Goa is swimming in its own shit and nobody has any plan what to do about it.

And the anti foreigner thing is still ongoing. Don't bother going to your local Panchayat for any type of No Objection Certificate, they've got enlarged xeroxes of the foreigners buying property scandal headlines on the walls. Candolim Panchayat refused last week to accept this years House Tax from a friend who owns her house; very unlike a Goan to refuse money.Another has been refused to apply to extend her Residents Permit which has been a straightforward procedure in all previous years.

Personally, it's getting too much hassle to have a quiet and decent life here and, before anyone else posts it, yes, I am most likely going to f### off to somewhere more civilized and welcoming. A shame really, after 14 years adding to a total in months of over 7 years here. But that's the mood of a good number of people here at the moment.

The politicians are using these figures to slag each other off: so what can we believe? It is impossible to know.

I haven't seen yet that Karunanidhi has been accused of supressing the fact that Rangss has had chickungunya, but it wouldn't surprise me. Whether you have had it or not, Ranggs .

Having said that, there does seem to be a lot of it about. GreenChutney has posted that several of his family have caught it...

India seems to be loosing the fight with Mosquitoes, through lack of political will to do the right thing. Fogging may produce a nice big visible cloud, but killing off today's mossies will not affect tomorrows.

As to the polluted wells and stuff: whilst that makes for bad general health conditions, I can't see it has much to do with the diseases that are spread from person to person by mossies. In fact, the dengue/chickungunya mossies have a strong preference for clean water!

I don't imagine that mossies are particularly class-conscious creatures, either --- so do migrant labourers really have much to do with it?

They breed in stagnant water. Takes about 6 days.

If you mean stagnant as in not-running, then yes...

But I think that the malaria mossie likes dirty water like our wonderful Chennai Buckingham Canal

I'm not an entomologist, but everything I've seen in the papers has said that the Chickungunya mossie breeds in clean water. There have been special warnings about uncovered roof tanks.

it's the 'aedes' mosquito that is the culprit (or so say the tv pundits). AND, it's the one that bites during the day!

There is definitely increased transmission due to migrant workers. They travel between regions, increasing the likelyhood for exposure. Once exposed they continue to be a carrier into a new area. Also, it is often these migrant laborers that are working on new construction or areas where there is little sanitation or vector control programs in place.

WHAT!?!??! Do you mean most fatalities occur during a second infection or most second infections are fatal!?!?

This Dengue Fever / Chicken-Gun-Yah business has really had me second guessing our impending move.

Chennai is one big garbage dump that hardly gets moved. An urban disaster in the making.
