There are 3 trains you can get from Madgaon station to Cancona station, a few kms from Palolem.

No need to book, they depart at...

14:25 (arr 14:57)
19:00 (arr 19:32)
22:40 (arr 23:06)

A 2nd class unreserved ticket will cost very little.

I'd be very happy if I could get a cab for Rs3-400, I'd be happy if I got one for Rs600.

Not true! You can get a bus from the NE corner( I think it's that corner )of the Municpal Garden(park, plaza, etc) in the center of Margao. But just ask at the park which corner. It takes about 1 1/5 hours depending. They have them to Palolem and Chaudi. Chaudi is the big town a few km. away from Palolem. If you have to wait awhile for the bus direct to Palolem, I would take the bus to Chaudi and take a rickshaw to Palolem unless of course you don't mind waiting.

From Madgaon railway station, take an autorickshaw to Kadamba bus stand in Madgaon city. From there direct buses are avilable right upto Palolem beach. If a bus is not leaving right away, take a bus till Chuadi village, from where you can change for Palolem.
If timings are suitable, take a train from Madgaon to Canacona.

Can someone give details about the 2 bus stations in Madgaon, there's the one by the main green in the centre of town (near the main post office) that I used a few years ago, then there's another one I used last year for the non-stop busses to Panjim, I've no idea where this one was located, I got a lift on a motorbike from the train station.

It's north off of NH17 if I'm not mistaken. I passed it on a bike trip up to Arambol one time.

here's a map of Madgaon

http://www.justindia.info/india/margao/margao-maps.asp#

Go up Abade Faria Rd. north. You'll see Kadamba (new) at the top left hand corner of the map. Thats the name of the K.T.C bus station
