Hi,
My wife and I are looking to relocate to India but we are having difficulty finding good long term accomodation (12 Months +). I'm looking to pay around 10,000 Rps a month for good, modern accomodation. Does anybody have any websites, contacts etc that may help? Also, does anybody have good tips on moving to Goa, problems etc that we are liklely to face? |

Hi,
Sorry I can't offer any answers here - I am thinking of moving to Goa long term myself and also wondering about accomodation. I was hoping to pay around 5,000 rps a month. If you have any information on the cost of living I would be very grateful and will let you know anything I find out. I am also interested in the expat community there. Are they all tourists, or are many long term residents? Is there a Western cultural life there? Theatre, for example. I was a drama teacher and may want to get involved with amateur theatre groups. I also like sailing and would be interested in hearing from anyone with info on that. Many thanks, CMcC |

>>I was hoping to pay around 5,000 rps a month. If you have any information on the cost of living I would be very grateful and will let you know anything I find out.<<
You can get a two bedroom apartment for that price in Vasco and Madgaon. Panaji is a little more. The cost of living varies and is dependent on your lifestyle. Alcohol and food are not expensive but the cost of petrol(gasoline) is fairly high and using a car on a daily basis can be very expensive. >>I am also interested in the expat community there. Are they all tourists, or are many long term residents?<< Unlike Bangalore and Delhi there is no expat community to speak of. There are a few people from Britain who are living in Goa on a long term basis. >>Is there a Western cultural life there? Theatre, for example. I was a drama teacher and may want to get involved with amateur theatre groups.<< None whatsoever. >>I also like sailing and would be interested in hearing from anyone with info on that<< That is expensive and not possible during the monsoon season. Today I negotiated with a woman at a living complex in Benaulim, right behind Johncy/Pedro's. They are nice, very nice, even by American standards. AC, everything. For a studio for 6 months starting in a couple days, she started at 25K a month. I said no more than 10K. I went up to 12K. She said no less than 15K and I declined. Man, they are probably the best place in Benaulim, though. Soooo nice. Pool. Everything. Much too nice for me, in fact
![]() Considering that this was essentially the "Ritz" of south Goa residences... I think you can do fine, depending on where you live, for that amount of money. You'll just have to look around. There aren't many ads in the paper. Hiring a guide is sorta iffy, because of the tout factor. Honestly I think maybe the best way to find long term accomodation is to hang out in the bars around the beaches and just ask people, politely if you can meet them. Thats how I checked this place out. But this isn't always easy... in south Goa alot of people are here to relax and want to be left alone. I hear the north is more wild/sociable. I'll find out when I head up there tomorrow. |

Wow, is it usual to start at 25 and accept 15. Seems sort of extreme when you're discussing apartment rent.
How is the rest of the deal - security deposit, key money / commission, length of commitment, notice period when you want to leave, etc.? Do you get a written contract? Thanks. David. |

Its the off season, so yes it is normal to haggle. We both know they will have vacancies for 6 months. Especially through the monsoon. Its just a question of their fixed costs: gardeners, security, cleaning people, maintenence people, electricity for AC, etc. No security deposit. No contract. No notice period. Pay at the beginning of the month and get a reciept for that month's stay, or leave. Simple. Best for both of us.
