Leela Palace now

Decided to swap hotels from Intercontinental to Leela after finding out that beach shacks had been evicted from Raj Baga. I hope the Intercontinental read this and realise that people prefer local shacks mostly because they offer far better value and better atmosphere to tourists.

Leela

Leela Palace? Couldn't you rough it just a little? That's a 7-star resort and the only problem with it is that you get pampered so much .... it makes it hard to leave! But watch out for the crows if you dine on the patio ... if you vacate even for a minute you'll lose you toast, jam jar, sugar packets etc. etc. Enjoy!

of course

7* ??? I think not. Which 7* are you comparing it to? It`s ok but not as good as Taj Exotica. Unfortunately, we can`t get in there now. We`ll enjoy ithe Leela though.

safe dining

The crow problem sounds similar to that at Majorda Beach hotel. Stayed there 1996. Some hotel staff were shooting them with air rifles.

Never stayed at Exotica, But stayed at Taj Fort Aquada a few times and Leela Palace was miles ahead of that - I'm talking Business travel and after they had their major renovations. Leela - Bombay airport was a bit of disappointment though!!

It is a 5 star. The Taj Exotica is the premier hotel in Goa and it was built after the Leela.

Actually the hotel star ratings system in India, I've never really understood and taken with a huge grain of salt ! If Fort Aquada Beach Resort is a 5-Star Deluxe which they claim, then Leela is at least a 6-star Deluxe. Perhaps Exotica is then a 7-star, but for my money the Taj group hotels are overrated, certainly the two in Delhi are ... more 4 star than 5-star.

The REAL 5 *s

Judging by the places we saw in Udaipur ( Lake Palace), Mumbai Taj , Delhi Taj, the Indians certainly know what 5* means, but perhaps the tourist places are not as well defined.

Starry Hotels

I think there are many 5 Star + Hotels in India based on the frosting or first impression which includes external architecture, luxurious lobby, rack rate, and thus overall Wow factor but quickly (after check-in) become sub 5-star from that point onwards if you don't demand the service you thought you had paid for!

I would have to disagree with that. As compared to the 5 star hotels in Canada and the US, the Taj hotels are excellent in terms of quality and value. The Taj Mumbai is comparable to the best in the west.

I presume there is a seperate rating for resorts from hotels....thats how the quality difference

Resorts are more liberally rated, with more stars when compared to a similar standard hotel

You are quite correct. The parameters for rating a resort are very arbitrary unlike city hotels which have a defined set of guidelines for their ratings.

The so called 1 star and 2 star hotels in Calangute and Candolim are actually no starred hotels. There is no rating agency which has conferred these "titles" on these establishments. Most of the hotels in Goa are self-starred.
