It is impossible to get the internet in south Goa
There is no broadband. No BSNL DSL: that is all bullshit. Tata Indicom is also advertising broadband that doesn't actually exist. Reliance has wireless through a cell phone, but its slow, and you can't get a post-paid account without proof of residence for over a year, and you can't get a pre-paid account without an Indian bank account... which, TA DA, you can't get without a permanent address and telephone number.
It is literally worse than soviet bureacracy here, when dealing with these companies. They have no idea how to do business... and I don't mean that in a "culturally relevant way," I mean that in an "organize your business so as to be efficient," kind of way. Small businesses here are great. Big businesses... Jesus God, they're terrible. I got an Airtel GSM phone which is supposed to do GPRS. I haven't gotten it working through my PC yet... but WAP works... about half the time, from Benaulim Beach. I went to Reliance in Margao 4 times before being told essentially: bribe me 5000 rupees and you can have a phone, otherwise piss off. The first time I went all over, checking deals. The next day I decided on reliance and went back to get a post paid account (1500 rupees for unlimited wireless internet). They were closed due to a strike over the VAT. He was open in the morning, but was threatened with vandalism, so he closed. Okay, hate to cross a picket line so... back the next day, and I must have a permanent address or get someone to get the phone for me. Look for someone to do that. Noone. Go back to get pre-paid. Oh, sorry... must have Indian bank account. But Indian bank account is not possible. So I got Airtel, and it is terrible. The problem is that I can't work without the internet. Its just not possible with what I do. So, I think I might have to move to Bangalore. I don't want to, but I might have to. This sucks. ![]() |

Hi, while I was in India I registered to use Reliance Webworld. Im not sure what you mean about having to prove permanent address. I wasn't asked to and nor were my friends.
Here is one outlet in Goa, its in Panji. Maybe you can go there instead of Bangalore ![]() http://www.relianceinfo.com/webapp/I...stWebWorld.jsp Cheers |

He's talking about getting his very own connection for his very own machine in his very own room. Whichever room he happens to be in at the time (as I understand it). And using it for work, which probably means lots of hours a day.
The internet centres are great for mailing home and doing some browsing, but that's about all.

Have you tried to get a local bank account? A friend had success with ICICI, but I didn't try myself. She stays 5 months each winter at the same guesthouse, so that must be what she used for an address and phone number. If you have a long-term arrangement where you stay, your host will often help out in these matters.

You need someone with an account to introduce you. Ask your landlord or a restaurant that you use regularly. At the ATM in Colva, the bank(not sure which one) is advertising accounts for overseas visitors. I opened an NRO account with Corporation Bank.

Reliance Web World is the place i went.
I just got my Airtel working through this PC. It is slow as piss, but useable. So, I guess it sorta worked out. Its slow, but at least I can work. Reliance was pretty slow too, so I guess this will have to do. Still kinda annoying for all these companies to advertise services like broadband that flat out DO NOT exist here yet, and who knows when they will. ![]() Oh well, as they say: "India always wins." |
