Is leather taboo in Goa

Hi - can you help - is it okay to wear leather jackets in Goa - also, is it frowned upon to smoke in public in Goa?

Wearing a leather jacket, mini skirt, crappy sun glasses, shorts that don't fit, old women in a mini bikini, even older men in a thong. the wrong football shirt, or indeed a bad "perm" won't get you noticed in most of the beach resorts of Goa.

It's nice that you are actually aware enough to ask but the "cultural paint war" has been won and for good or for bad. A blind eye has been turned for the "greater good" In Goa.
Pretty much anything goes in the name of making money (I'm not knocking that it's just reality) and a stand for cultural responsibility in Goa seems a thankless task!!

You'll still be astounded by the hospitality of the locals though, one thing that has has survived the ravages of tourism!!

The weather in Goa is too warm for wearing a leather jacket. You will feel uncomfortable wearing it.

Is wearing a leather jacket taboo anywhere? Judging by the number of shops selling them in Spencer Plaza, I wouldn't have thought so. Mind you, far too hot to wear one here.

Probably better not to rush into a temple wearing one, but then, I don't suppose Indian men take off their leather belts...

Belts, shoes, etc. I don't think leather is taboo at all.

But best not to ask your Brahmin friend to help you do a quick repair on your jacket! Oh dear, no!

Smoking? Yes. Mustn't smoke anywhere in India. The many men you see smoking are just an illusion. I wish, I wish, I wish

Unless you are a woman: you won't see a woman smoking in public

Thanks everyone - it's my dad - it's very cold in the UK in Feb (snowing) so needs to take something to keep warm - but I'll take it that it's no. And smoking in public is a no then as well?

I was joking about the smoking (or wishfull thinking...). The tobacco companies have to peddle their poisons somewhere, and places where politicians are more interested in money and power than health of the population* are great markets.

I don't know Goa, but the streets here are full of men smoking. It is a no-no for women.

*there are exceptions. I don't know the up-to-date story of the attempt to ban gutka (paan masala) in Maharashtra, but at least it shows there are some politicians that care

Goa seems to have a bit of a bee in it's bonnet over smoking and what with the parties practically a thing of the past, the local Police have to subsidise their salaries somehow!!
