I keep reading the thread title as
Is Benalin* the answer to my conundrum ? ![]() *should be spelt Benylin, it is a cough mixture which some (ab)use as a recreational drug. Bit of a downer; probably end up washed up with those sea snakes!

I was in Goa recently and stayed at Colonia Jose Menino at Fatarde beach. This beach is adjacent to Varca beach and is very quiet and beautiful. The hotel charges 800/- for non-AC rooms.
And there are taxis availble from just outside the hotel and Madgaon is about 20 minutes away. If you need any other info, just PM me. |

Thank you, Ntomer, that sounds like a lovely place. Will definitely check it out.
Nick, that mixture does not look like the answer to my conundrum one bit ! But if I find some I'll use it to fight off the snakes. |

Reporting back after a week in Benaulim / Sernabatim.
Prices have gone up quite a bit. After some searching I ended up in Sundance Hotel, next to Furtado's on Sernabatim. I'll review it in the hotel section shortly. In short, certainly not your best bet, but a budget option (400 Rs). Benaulim was, if not crowded, at least well-populated. Rooms available most everywhere (3rd week of december) but around 800 Rs. The beach is rather quiet if you stay in a hotel that doesn't play stupid music all day and night. It is clean-ish in front of some hotels, and not in front of others. Look out for carcasses of beach crabs lining the front of hotels, they are guaranteed to smell bad. Saw no water snakes, possibly because I didn't go too far and the waves close to the shore are too strong for snakes. It's a good idea to stay near the shore, if only because the eejits who rent the jetski cruise dangerously close to the swimmers, in order to impress the sweetheart on the shore. On the other hand the dogs can be a bother when you walk along the beach at night. They have a way of running at you full speed, barking loud, emerging from total darkness, that's not reassuring when you are alone and know nowt about dogs. Turns out they are the friendly, if rather hard to get rid of, variety, and they respond well to authority. Little entertainment : a few live gigs, of debatable quality, and a couple of "parties" that turned out to be people sitting down and drinking cocktails to loud music. I wanted quiet, I got quiet. The best entertainment I got was from the fire jugglers who seem to come from all over the world to give nighttime performances. Some of them are really first class. I'll post a separate thread with my addresses in this forum. Hope this helps. |
