Internets in Goa

So, I'm wondering about internet access in Goa. What kind of speeds can you get via dialup connections from a phone line with a modem? Do net-cafe's/computer clubs have wireless access, or at least allow you to plug in your notebook directly? I'm moving to Goa in part because it is a cheap place for me to live while I do some software development, and as such I will be needing to download documentation from the net every day.

So... how is the net access in Goa? I know there are alot of net-cafes all over India, but I have heard that speed/reliability is a real issue.

Put it this way I once spent 45 mins waiting for Hotmail to open once. Then there was a power cut. You'd do better to get your own connection if you are renting a place long term.

Is this the case in a city, like Panaji? You had these problems all over, or just the once? I can look around and find a place with a decent connection, and then live near there... or not?

Dear Friend,

You might not have to much problem as you are going to stay longer in Goa so you can take a lease line ie Cabel Internet which is 24 hrs should cost you approx Rs 1,000 or 25 USD per month.Another thing you have your Lap Top so you can buy a local mobile phone and hook it up.The problem is generally for tourist who have to go to expensive cafes for mailing or surfing and on lease line or cable line 10 people are surfing so the speed is going to be quite slow. The best place is to get Hooked up with a Lease line ie Cabel internet 24 hrs thats the way you go.

Buy and chill in Goa

Ah ha! Thanks for the info

So you mean I could use GPRS through a USB cable to a phone? Any idea how much GPRS service is a month, is it unlimited use, and how fast?

As to Cable... is it a nightmare to get installed, and do you have to be in a city near a Cable office, etc?

When you get to Goa you can go into a small convenient store its best to buy a Sim card get your phone activated. But note you will need an Indian Mobile and unlike America you do not get Free phones with Sim cards so you will have to definately buy a phone.Once you let a apartment of your own in Goa then you can call the cabel guy to activate the 24 hrs cabel net so you can stay hooked up all day.Prices may vary from place to place.
Also check about the Internet Cabel gateway before you book a place.
Definately it cannot exist in every place in Goa as its a big place and another thing some places are developed and some yet to develop.

Goa Divided as per my info
South - Beautiful beaches, peace and peace no hustle bustle of tourist
Central - Capital of Goa Panjim just like any other city ( Better then Mumbai and Delhi)
Mid North ( Fancy Restaurants, combi for Up Market and semi budget tourist,Lively shacks with good food,Pubs and Cafes) Candolim,Calangute beahc
North Extreme - Truly Hippy
There are many more places other then i know which you will explore in your long stay

Get a two wheeler Motor bike licence as you cant live in Goa without a Scotty or bike

take it easy

I'm in Colva at the moment in I-Way internet who claim broadband speed but I think it's about 64K. Cost is 20rupees per hour. Re the phone, I use my own UK bought Motorola V50 which had to be unlocked, cost 350rs in Margao.Latest models might cost more, as not all places can unlock them. A friend is having a camera phone unlocked and it had to be sent elsewhere to be done for a cost of 1200.You'll soon sort everything out when you arrive no problem.

Unlock mobile

Hi. Can anyone please explain me why the phone has to be unlocked. If I use my European mobile in India there should not be any unlocking. Right?

In some markets, especially here in the US, when you buy a phone at a discounted rate from your provider with your contract, your phone is "locked" to only work on their network. If such a phone were to try to work in India, it would not work. Being that its Europe, you shouldn't have this same problem... but I'd call and check, or search www.howardchui.com or www.howardforums.com for information on your phone and provider and locking/unlocking, or check with your cell provider about using your phone in India.

My provider, T-mobile, for instance will give you an unlock code, and the procedure for unlocking your locked phone, if you are a customer for 6 months or a year.

I switched from a contract with T Mobile to Pay as you go with Virgin in the UK. My phone was not locked by T Mobile. When I arrived here it would not accept IDEA, so presumably Virgin locked it.

WiFi Access

Hi,

I'm travelling to Goa tomorrow and know the place pretty well.

WiFi access and laptops at:

Taj Holiday Village in Candolim North Goa
Taj Exotica Benaulim South Goa

These are 5 star resorts but non-residents can use the facilities although probably more expensive. Even expensive in Goa is cheaper than UK.

Most of the bigger hotels seem to be going wifi. Find one with conference facilities, business clientele ... they might have better connections but dont count on it.

If anyone else knows of WiFi access in North Goa please post, especially around Baga as I will have to make a trip to Candolim to use my laptop.

I have a Powerbook (mac) which I doubt many Indians have seen.

Cheers

I've accessed email at some of the small cafes and have waited 10 mins for the hotmail login page to appear .... 28k modems?

Connecting to the Net in Goa

Things are better in the bigger towns (Panjim or Panaji, Margao, Mapusa, even to a lesser degree, Calangute). In the distant areas, Internet access can be slow!

I live 8 kms from Panjim, and have a Rs 500-per-month that gives me unlimited dial-up 33.6 kbps access to the Net. (I could also use a 56.6 kbps modem, but mine isn't that). It costs me Rs 4-6 per hour extra for Internet charges, but is free 11 pm to 8 am.

The Internet broadband links tend to cost around Rs 20 per hour, and tend to be speedy. By local standards, that is. My favourite is Sify at City Centre in the heart of Panjim (near Centurion Bank). That's because it has a 24-hour-service, and apart from being fairly fast, never shuts!

BSNL, the local ISP, has just announced a broadband service. See details at
http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goan...ry/023924.html

Note however, that the "broadband services will be launched in itially
from Panjim, Patto, Mapuca, Calangute, Margao, Fatorda, Aquem and Verna areas". In other areas, the launch of the service will depend on the "volume of booking". See also http://goa.bsnl.co.in/broadband.html

BSNL can be glitchy at times. VSNL also offers a service in Goa; their offices are at Verna.

In sum: you should be able to get your work done; provided you're in the right place in Goa! FN
