Insurance against accidents/illness in India?

Hi!
I am a Swedish guy and I did my first visit 3 weeks dec/jan 2006 to Kerela, India. I rented a Bullet and went from Chochin all way down to the Soutern tip of India and back via the Western Ghats. All in all around 1000 km. I loved it and the bike was very cheap to rent as well as servicing. I payed 150 rp for 2 hours service och repairing. The guy was looking for something wrong with the electical wiring. It just wouldn´t start. He found the problem and I got it fixed. Grate value!

My question: After this trip I would like to stay in India for 1 year och more. How do you solve the Insurance problem? In case i get sick or have an motorcycle accident I would not want to go to some bad indian hospital. As long as I stay 45 days only, my Swedish Insurance Company pays if something happens. If I stay longer I would have to pay the Swedeish insurance Company 80 pounds/month. And then yet, I still will be tranported to the closest Hospital (I guess they haven´t seen what kind of hospitals there are in India!).
How have you solved this problem? All of you stand the risk of getting ill and having an accident! Any cheap Indian solutions that work? Do you pay a fee that will ensure you good treatment on a modern hospital?!
Happy for an answer. This is important for us all!

The simple answer is that you can not stay more than 180 days in India continuously. You will have to leave India and apply for a fresh tourist visa which will enable you to stay for another 180 days.

Go to http://www.worldnomads.com/. They have one of the cheapest prices in travel insurances.

Hi,

you have to effect a private insurance. The conditions and prizes are very different, in some you can choose the hospital. Transport to your home country is usually only paid if you can't get an adequate traetment in India. And not you but the insurance will decide about that....

For doctors and hospitals you don't need an insurance, as for Westerners the prices seem incredible low. But in case you really need a transport to your home country, an insurance is highly recommended.

Personally i made very good (but luckily not too many) expierences with Indian doctors, and not every hospital is that shocking, there are very good private hospitals, too.

In regards to insurance, you know they won't cover you if you don't have the legal crudentials to drive there, right?

Canadian citizens are eligible for 5 year tourist visas.

Insurance is one thing, visa's and other, and driving legaly not quite another, as if itis not legal the insurance company will indeed certainly not pay out.

But, unless it is a specific exclusion in the policy, an International Driving Licence sould suffice I would have thought?
