MUMBAI (Reuters) - India has tightened security in its southern resort state of Goa amid fears of a terrorist attack ahead of the tourist season and an international film festival there, officials said on Wednesday....A Goa police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the state had been warned by central intelligence agencies that there could be an attack.

One reason why foreigners are being singled out for attention... 'cut to thread on buying property in goa part x!'

The government has been concerned about Goa and its parallels with Bali for foreign tourists. And places with foreign (read US or European) tourists do get targeted worldwide, from hotels to resorts in Egypt etc, so its a legitimate fear, I guess.

depends on what type of attention

There's a big difference between security forces concerned about your wellbeing, and nationalistic forces saying "Auslander Raus"!

Seriously, I think the Bali-type of terrorism targeted Bali especially because it is not only an enclave of western-style pleasure in a Muslim country, but also a Hindu enclave in an otherwise Muslim country. And I think though foreigners may be more high-profile, this type of terror will target anyone seen to be enjoying what's perceived as free and easy western lifestyles - Indian tourists in Goa as well.

SS I think he was referring to the new rules on renting out houses and motor bikes.
And I agree there certainly seems to be a bit of what you say going on in Goa but it's not representative of the welcome you'll receive there!!

Goa like many places has seen an avalanch of immigration and people moving in from out of state, they're worried and some choose to play on this worry.
Goa and Goans are warm and friendly!

Apparently there's a guard in the lifeguard stand at Colva toting an AK47. What's he gonna shoot at? Anyone in a swimsuit who looks like a terrorist?
