The Chalston beach resort is one of the oldest hotels in Calangute and it does have a decent reputation. I can't tell you how good or bad the rooms are because I have not stayed there myself.

The Marquis beach resort is OK although overpriced in my opinion. Although it is calling itself as a 3-star resort I personally would not classify it as 3 star.

This is a top class resort whch is very well maintained. Very comfortable with great gardens you can lie undisturbed. Nice pool area also and very very good service and exceptionally clean.

I would thoroughly recommend it. It is not cheap (around 3000 per room) but much better value than going to Taj resorts.

If you are at all worried about Goa or first timer and have a bit extra to spend go here.

You can also get excellent Ayurvedic massage from a TRAINED masseur not a bogus beach tout.

So which one is it?? OK (GoanCanuck) or Top Class Resort (Big Neil)? Our Goan friend whom has lived in Goa his whole life, knows the people that own the hotel and is supposedly going to get us a deal??? I suppose we will have to see what he comes up with..Waiting for an email from him!

Thankīs GoanCanuck!

Meanwhile I found their website ( chalston.com ) and it looks kind of what I expected. Not too stylish n starish, comfortable but literally budget, family run without great luxury but hopefully a friendly staff. The photos on their site look indeed decent to me - except maybe the pool, which is a bit small. But anyway, who needs a pool when there are a hundred kmīs of beaches waiting to be explored ?

Take your time, hurry up, choice is yourīs, donīt be late...... no, surely not!

See ya

I agree that the prices at Marquis are overinflated (on website). I've never tried to book direct, I wouldn't pay www advertised prices. I lucked out and stayed there my first trip to Goa at a great price.

I know the manager and most of the staff, I usually visit there every year.
Each year they have either painted or renewed something to a good standard (by Goa). Standards are maintained well.

The star rating is well exploited thoughout Goa. There are some 3 stars that deserve 1.

You will find cheaper no doubt. I don't know how busy Candolim is at present.

To get to Goa for 1 month I have had to take a 4 week package and will be staying at the Dona Alcina (supposed 3 star) which I am bracing myself for! I haven't read a good review. I may well be looking for somewhere to stay myself (and partner). I don't intend hanging around Candolim too much if it is busy and will probably head south.

Hehehe. I would not give it more than 1 star. These days in Goa any hotel with a swimming pool thinks it is alright if it advertises as a 3 star hotel.

If your friend knows the owners then maybe he can get you a discount. I would not pay more than Rs 1800 for this hotel. Make sure that you don't go for the All Inclusive package which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Can't wait to see what s**t I am offered. I'm pretty well primed to give any MyTravel rep or whoever a total bollocking. Hey I'm Scottish, can't be fleeced that easily.... or without a good match.

If your offer still stands or if you have any recommendations, I will be in Goa 1/30 - 2/5.
Need to pick a place and I have heard about these. Do you know anything about them? We are leaning to Anjuna, but nearby would be fine.

1. Sunset Bar in anjuna, 500rs for a twin bedded room with attached shower room, Rs 500 plus two bed. Fisherman 0832 2273917

2. Mantheven Homes
E1 248 B, Holiday Street,
Gaurawado, Calangute,
Bardez, Goa, 403 516,
Mobile: 94224 44393 Landline: 0832 2275828
1000 INR per day

3 Pretty Petals Guest House GOA, Code No- AT-GA 69 About Rs 500, among traditional houses near Candolim beech, (minutes, don’t say drive or walk). Seem to have a lot of facilities including pool http://www.ashextourism.com/hotelsre...guesthouse.htm

Thanks
Hi Guyanamr

Dont know if you have sorted your accommodation out yet but I have stayed
at MANTHEVEN HOMES twice and found it excellent (5min walk to beach).
