I agree, the Panjim large 'local supermarket' are very friendly and it is the same price for everybody. But tourists would not know that. It is the tourists that are getting ripped off. and because of the two week change over the places like Newtons, Lwanda's etc. get away with it. Bet they would not use the dual pricing in Monsoon.

I am sure that when we talk about the way traders/service providers treat foreign tourists in Goa, then most of us are also aware the way Indian tourist is treated there ?

It is only in the last few years that Indian tourists are being treated cordially by the various bars and stores in Goa. Not so long ago it was impossible for an Indian tourist to get a motorcycle on hire. Ditto for certain hotels who used to openly say to the Indian tourist that all the rooms were "full" when the hotel was almost empty.

I agree, the main problems for tourists (both foreign and domestic)is on the coastal belt.We went into Newtons a couple of Months ago for the first time, and walked out empty handed because of the prices.Tourists are ripped off worldwide but it doesn't mean you have at accept it,whether it's Goa or London.

In the last few years Indians have started to spend a lot of money in Goa.

However, still as an Indian I felt the negative vibes a few times. Its sad to be treated this way by fellow Indians.

I hear ya. The basic philosophy of an average restaurateur in the coastal belt is to make "fast money" and as a result he goes for the low hanging fruit which are the European package tourists. Too much work and effort required to make money off the Indian tourists.

Charming "low hanging fruit" are we. At least this low hanging fruit, does not get up from the table in full view of diners, go outside and wee on the pavement and spit on the floor when people are dining. I like to think we are all equal, and deserve to be treated with respect.

I just wanted you guys to please acknowledge that this price hike or inflation is just not impacting the tourists but every common man of this country. And I know that this thread is on Goa, but I wanted to bring into notice that Bangalore with its additional state taxes, is leading to become the costliest city in India... with Shell fuel prices going on at Rs. 70 a litre. A cold coffee in Barista or Coffee day costs you ~Rs. 80/-... some of you have put in really nice views and facts on the causes behind this, and I can understand a tourist's agony with unjustified high prices of food and commodities, just wanted to reinstate the fact that people like me have to live with this everyday and it impacts us more. Tourists at least have the option of not coming to India, but a common man in India does not have that luxury to make a choice. As a world citizen, I hope, we all realize our responsibility not just towards our country, but the world as a whole when we vote for our choice of govtt.

Note: This post is by no means meant to offend anyone, and if involuntarily it has, my apologies in advance.

Umm, fun savvy, the point being made is that tourists (specially foreign ones) are being fleeced. Inflation has nothing to do with getting cheated.

Though I have disagreed with some points made here, and also the way they are made, the fact remains that wherever fleecing happens, it is not nice.

If you go to a coffee shop chain anywhere in the world the coffee is outrageously expensive. In whose world is coffee shop coffee a necessity? Is the "common man" in India really complaining about the price of a mocha frappuccino?
Can't we be content with low-hanging fruit snacks?

I think the BJP announced a bandh over the price of mocha frappuccinos!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled rant about Goa's taxi drivers.

Interesting discussion. Here are some of the things I gleaned from the recent posts:
  • The restaurateurs in Goa like to make fast money. Surely, just as restaurateurs and other business people - everywhere in the world. Heck, I plead guilty to aspiring to make my money as fast as possible and enjoy the rest of the life. As long as prices are listed on the menu you order from, it is fair game anywhere.
  • There was a reverse racism in Goa where Indians were not welcome. But that is changing as Indians are spending more money. So, just may be, an alternate explanation is that it is not the race or nationality but the money that is the driver - and what's so Indian about that idea. As for the value conscious tourists, just may be Goa is simply not a good destination. There are a few other places they ought to cross off their list.
  • There are overpriced, even priced and value priced outlets in Goa. One needs to look - just as anywhere else. And, no - the tourists do not know that easily, unless they research - just as anywhere else.
  • Some want to make this a thread about the dual pricing - only practiced by the Indian central and state governments. Now I am not a supporter of this practice, but there is a different thread for it. This thread is reserved for beating up on the greedy poor - who aren't really so poor after all.

Captain it looks as if the "low hanging fruits" are going to stay away this year.
"UK tourists down due to the visa and safely issued"
33% of Goans economy comes from tourists
Flights down from 42 a day to 25.
