Hotel with Internet Connection

I'm seriously considering spending six months or so in Goa starting in the near future. I run a website and need to have access to the internet as soon as I arrive. An internet cafe is not really a good solution for me because I need to be online for quite a few hours every day and the hours I need to be online will be late at night Goa time.

As such, I need to find a hotel that has wifi or broadband of some sort in the room where I can go online with my laptop. I've found a few on Google, but the prices seem ridiculously high $100-$400 night. I'll be staying in a hotel until I find an apartment. I plan to get a data card so that I can get wireless internet as soon as I'm able; either that or a blue tooth connection through my cell phone. As I said, though, I need to be up and running as soon as I touch down so it's important that my room have internet.

Any ideas?

You won't get broadband internet access in the budget hotels in Goa. Only the 5 star and boutique hotels have that facility. You will have to use cyber cafes or a cell phone connection.

Well, I don't necessarily need a budget hotel, but at least one that is a bit more reasonable than $100/night.

What about private apartment rentals?

The hotels that have broadband are all $100/day and above. Just get a cellphone connection.

Thanks, can you point me in the right direction where to get set up right away with a cell connection? Also, how fast is the connection? I don't expect it to be broadband speed, but is it tolerable?

The speed is tolerable if you are not uploading or downloading large files.
You can read about the details here

You won't attain the claimed speeds except possibly early morning.

Just tested my speed twice. Download first 36 kbps then 48 kbps. That's 7.45 am. My supposed speed is 115.2 Kbps. That's Reliance landline(satellite).

How is the reliability? Is there a lot of downtime? If so, how long does it usually stay down?

Also, did I understand correctly? The Platinum plan offers unlimited bandwidth usage for a flat fee of 1500 rps/month?

Have you decided where you are going to stay while living in Goa?

No not yet. I thought it would be best to stay in a hotel for a week or two while I explored. Since I've never been there, I don't know where I would rather be.

I'd like to live somewhere close to a nice beach where there are also expat hangouts so that I have someone to chat with when I'm not working. I'm sure that there are several options and I'll only know where I'm most comfortable once I see and experience Goa for myself.

In addition, I'm going to try to get my landlord to agree to connect a broadband line to my apartment so this will play a large role in where I end up settling down. I know you mentioned to me that they might not all agree to do this. I'm willing to negotiate with them and pay for it though, so hopefully I can find one that's accomodating. In the past we have paid through the nose for internet connections here in St Pete, so this is not a big deterent to me.

Namaste,
5 and 4 star hotels were charging 100 to 200 USD per time used. Local stands were 40 INR an hour
, cell phone is only option and that is still way high. A good luck trick I learned was that you can put daily posting on USD compact drive at your housing and locals will plug USC memory stick it into their system and you can copy and post that way. That what I was going to due until a bent cf pin did not allow my camera to take a photo. Spent $2,000 USD on camera and gear to literally take it around the world and never get to use it. But I got some great postcards 20 for 1 USD

Also watch out for United flight coming back as they has a 50US LB limit on luggage, had to buy another suitcase and still pay $50 USD per other two bags. Extra $130 for trip back carrying inoperable photo gear, now that was a great bonus.

Nich H can you also post this in Packing Tips? Thanks

More stories and photos and video will follow. Our room mate who had the Internet connection split and took the computer that he had given my son (with all his school work on it, wonderful surprise coming home)

So only have city library connect, but will do work at home put on cf memory stick and upload that way.

Also lost lease on house, so looking in Salt Lake City, Utah in the middle of winter for a new home.

Welcome back to me

Namaste, gregor

Vigile, Do look at the reliability of the electricity supply wherever you are planning to get internet access. Some areas may well have iffy power supply.
