help with intinerary please

Hi,
My wife and I will be in Goa staying in Colva from 26 Feb for two weeks. We were there for a week last December. We didn't really get around much , other than a trip to the market in Margao, because we just fancied a lazy week away. Next time we will want to do a bit but not too much. we are both in our late fifties.

Can someone suggest some places to go and how to get to them and roughly how much it will cost from Colva.

For example, how much will a tuk-tuk cost for a day or perhaps a taxi?

How much should we expect to pay if we hired a scooter for a day or two. What documents do we need to take to hire a scooter, if any. can we get crash helmets etc.

Visits to market s would be nice. Anywhere for good bird watching(feathered variety!)

You know what I mean. Anything that would make our two weeks enjoyable without being over-bearing.

Many thanks in advance. Pete

Have you considered Hampi?

Hampi: Everything you want to know.

It's not a 'day-out' kind of place and would probibly take a minimum 4 days out of your holiday (inc. travel), but would add a whole new meaning to your holiday.

The best way to get there is by train, it's a long journey, but parts of the journey are very scenic, rising from the coast up through the hills past waterfalls.

Colva is only a 30 minute ride from Madgaon (Margao) train station.

Trains in India are a way of life and a great adventure, not just a journey.

Goa - Hampi train info.

Pete, you will need an international drivers licence for driving a scooter in Goa along with a helmet. You can hire a scooter without a licence but you could end up being fined by the police. The cost of hiring a scooter is Rs 150-200/day. The helmet will be provided by the person who loans you the scooter.

In case you are stopped by the police make sure that you tell them you are just borrowing your friends scooter. Don't say that you hired it. Give them the contact info of the person to whom the scooter belongs.

A tuk-tuk(autorickshaw) is not suitable for travelling any distance more than 15 km. You can hire a taxi for the whole day from the main square in Colva. The total cost for the day will depend on,

1) how many Kilometres you travel
2) Type of vehicle being hired

If you hire a Maruti van taxi you would be paying about Rs 800 approximately for the whole day. If you use the same taxi driver every day you will get a discount.

Have you driven a scooter previously? If not, then I would strongly advise against doing so.

From Colva you can take the scooter/taxi and visit the capital city of Panjim(Panaji). Make sure you pay a visit to Fontainhas which is the only Latin Quarter in South Asia. The streets in this locality have cobblestones and retain the charm of 200 years ago.

Another place to be not missed is Ancestral Goa which is in Loutolim which is a village not far from Margao. Check this http://www.ancestralgoa.com/

GoanCanuck. About tha village? is there an entry at all? Is it a place to spend the whole day? Is there a restaurant/bar there at all?

Any idea how much a taxi would be from Colva? Is it a big tourist attraction?

Why wouldn't you recommend the scooters please.

cheers, Pete

Pete, it is OK to hire a scooter if you have a lot of experience in riding 2 wheelers but not otherwise. Too many people end up having an accident. A taxi will charge you about Rs 450 to this village and back. There is a bar and restaurant where you can have lunch and a few beers.
