Goa vs Kerala
Hi travellers
Im planning my next India-tour and Im pritty sure I will need a couple of days on the beach, away from the crowds. Last time I was in Kerala(Varkala)and I had a splendid week by the spetacular cliffs. But its always nice to see new places so I wonder: how is Goa compared to the beaches of Kerala?? |

Kerela has limited beaches, however a lot more to offer except the beaches. In Goa its only about the beaches. Last year I was in Kerela and this year Calangute in Goa, but I guess Kerela did it better for me.
However if you want to spend long time then Goa would better, as you can move along different beaches.. |

the konkan strip between mumbai and goa do it for me! great threads on IM about the beaches on this strip... should be in the mumbai forum.
the karnataka coastline is also a favourite beach-combing locale for me. both goa and kerela for me - well - umm - good enough for a one-time visit... :brishti |

Thanks both of you
So if you want to experience anything else than beaches, Goa has little to offer? Ive only been to Varkala in Kerala, is there any other beaches worth visiting there? |

Sorry, that's not true. Goa has much more to offer than beaches: visit Portuguese mansions in Loutulim or Chandor, see Panjim, Old Goa and small churches and temples...
The difference between Goa and Kerala: In Goa you can go for swimming/sunbathing on all beaches, in Kerala there are a lots of fishermen beaches where it is not advisable to lay down and have a sunbath. Kerala is much much bigger than Goa, so of course there is "more to see". If you liked the atmosphere of Varkala, you'll like Goa, too. |

The primary attraction are the beaches, the rest get eyeballs because of the beaches..otherwise it all can be done in a day or 2.. When I said Kerela, I meant the different variety of Hill Stations, Beaches, Backwaters, religious places, wildlife etc... |

the main differences is tha tmore of Goan beaches are "developed" with shacks. These and the more lax liquor laws make the Goan beach experience more pleasant for some. However, Goan beaches can get ridiculous crowded during the holiday season.

From your descriptions both Kerala and Goa sounds tempting. In different ways. Correct me if Im wrong, but it seems like you can find equally beautiful and not too crowded beaches, so the choice depends more on what else the place has to offer .. ...
Thanks again! |
