Things will be heating up by then, but still bearable. As there's many trains, it should take from 8-11 hours, depending. And the trains are perfectly fine. 2nd. class is fine for a day or night trip.
Don't know the price of a flight now but a search should give you a rough idea.
As for Mumbai, Colaba is the area where most travelers tend to stay. Do a search here on Mumbai and theres also some sites about Mumbai like www.mumbainet.com and a few others. Do a search.

Just out of curiosity, why Baga?

Hello bertyboy and welcome to indiamike.com

The time saved by flying will be largely lost by the time you get to the airport, check in, wait, wait, fly, then get from the airport.

Trains from Thivim (closeish to Baga) will take 11.5 hours (overnight) to Mumbai CST (close to Fort area), or just over 7 hours (late afternoon departure) to CST, ther is also a 11.5 hour daytime train.

Fares, 2-tier air con will be about the same as a flight, First Class air con will be more expensive, but the popular classes used by tourists will be cheaper (3-tier air con) and significantly cheaper (Sleeper Class).

Sleeper Class details & photos.

The faster daytime train only has seats though, air con chair class (about the same price as 3-tier air con) and non air con seats, slightly cheaper than Sleeper Class.

Do one journey during the day, it's a really scenic route.

The overnight train coming back from Mumbai to Goa is very popular, especially thursday through to saturday, it would need to be booked well in advance (weeks, not days).

The following links will explain the differences in the classes.

Skip Baga unless you are the tour bus package hotel traveler, its gotten soo crowded there that the main drag is like Mumbai at rush hour. Go a few towns North of there. Each town North of Baga gets less crowded. Or way South.

Goa to Mumbai? Take a sleeper bus dude 350 to 500rs. The bus company, Paolo Travels is what most backpackers and Mumbai party kids swear by. Its like a 14 hour ride from the evening arriving in Mumbai in the morning and they drop off in Colaba.
Train is fine, AC is going to cost 1200 or so, sleeper I think around 750? But I have found that sleeper busses are the most fun.

Sleeper train from Mumbai CST (Victoria Terminus; well worth seeing/ experiencing) takes about 11 hours to Tivim, Goa (THVM), though it can also take up to 15 hours!. Tivim is your nearest stop for Baga. Get a pilot motorbike, rickshaw or taxi to Baga; all will be waiting outside the station. Bargain hard!

No need for A/C in my opinion. Get an "Inside, Top Berth" and you can kip there even once it's morning. Train journey is fantastic; choice of official Indian Railways menu (which is ordered and brought to you), or countless vendors who work the corriders with "chai, coffee, tomato soup, samosas, sandwiches, cold drinks, omelette, fruit, you name it!).

Expect to be stared at and questioned sometimes alarmingly bluntly about anything and everything; your purpose in India, occupation, salary, family. This is friendly banter, and typically Indian.

However, be careful of your belongings, particularly when visiting the toilet which you will smell some distance before you arrive to use it.Thefts do occur, as anywhere. Also, there have been cases of foreigners being drugged and robbed having shared drink or food. Do so at your own discretion.

Mumbai to Tivim (Sleeper) was most recently very cheap at 379 rupees. Domestic air fares have shot up incredibly in the past few months (200 rupees more each week) because of rising cost of Aviation Fuel. The cheapest Mumbai/Goa single flight I could get this month was with Indian Airlines at 3,800 rupees, and that was booked well in advance. That said, the budget airlines are really suffering a downturn and the "golden days" of affordable air transport for all are temporarily over. Routes and the number of flights have been cut.

Consequently, Indians have flocked back to rail and bus transport, so you have to book well in advance because of high demend.I would not advise being 200 on "Waiting List", although it is sometimes possible to get on board ticketless and bribe the "chitty" (ticketmaster), even if you may end up on a corridor floor next to the latrine; not a good experience, and a waste of what is otherwise a wonderful trip.

These sights are a good help:

The Konkan Kanya Expres 0111 leaves Mumbai CST daily at 23.05 with an expected arrival at Madgaon (Margao) of 12.30 ( you get off at Tivim, one stop after Pernem, two stops after Sawantwadi). Present cost for a Sleeper berth is 293 Rupees.

Hi,

We flew from Dabolim to Mumbai last novemeber and it cost about £32 each. This was bought at a local travel agent in Arambol and seemed pretty good value. The flight took an hour. We were looking at trains but they were all booked up for the festival week.

hope that helps

I am afraid that is no longer true, due to fuel price rise, air travel has become quite expensive. A flight now would cost same as first class air con (unless u get very lucky and get a windfall deal)

Thanks for the update.

I've done a few searches for fares recently and was surprised at how high the fares were, It must be because of the fuel prices.

A few tips...
When you are in Goa, avoid the popular (read crowded) beaches like Kolwa, etc. they'll just upset you!
You should try hunting for secluded beaches and shacks... very few people (mainly foreign tourists) know about these clean and really beautiful beaches.
P.S. On the verge of sounding like a marketer, I'd really recommend Curlies (a shack) at Anjuna, we had a great time over there. Enjoy your trip!
