Do you plan to get a taxi to the train station?

(Post edited to add Canacona details)

You can get a train from Verna Station direct to Karwar. (and Canacona)

Verna is just off the Highway 17 about 12 kms north of Madgaon.

The advantage of this train is that you just turn up, but a ticket and board the train.

Don't let anyone tell you that verna station doesn't exist or that the train only runs from Madgaon, they tried this with me 2 weeks ago, they may try to take you to Cansaulim station, but insist on Verna, the're not trying to con you, they just don't know about Verna Station.

We paid about Rs600 for a taxi from Calangute to Verna (we had to, we had a baby and we were going on a 3 day trip to Murudeshwar, recommended)

Train KR1 depart Verna daily at 13:55 and gets to Karwar at 15:22 (Canacona at 14:57), though 16:00 is a more likely time, it seems the train always runs a bit late.

A 2nd class seat will cost about Rs30.

This train starts from Verna, so you'll always get a window seat, and though it then calls at Madgaon about 30 minutes later, you may not have much choice about where to sit if you board the train in Madgaon.

The photo below was taken from the steps of Verna station.

Try to sit by an emergency window, they are situated towards the middle of the carriage and you will easily identify them.

The bars of the window can be lifted up to leave a completely open space as shown in the photo below.

Thivim is closer, but you can't get bookings on the trains for the short distance to Karwar, (not that there are any seats/berths left).

So you'd have to travel in unreserved 2nd class, and these trains will be very busy.

If you dont mind standing on a crowded train......

Otherwise, a bus to Panjim, then a bus to Madgaon, then a bus to Karwar.

I can give you the phone number of the landlady where I stayed in Calangute, she can get you the same driver I used to get to Verna Station, he a nice friendly lad and he now knows where the station is.

You'd have to be very polite to the landlady though, she just gives the lad work sometimes, and there is nothing in it for her.
