Hi,

There is no direct train from Goa (Madgaon) to Chennai. The best route will be through Mangalore (Manalore / Kankanadi), where you have to change station. There is two station in Mangalore, you might have to get down at one, like Kankanadi and catch next train from Mangalore station. The distance between them is around 15-20 km and pvt & public transport is available.
Here are the train options

Goa - Mangalore

2432 TRIVNDRM RJDHNI *MADGAON 12:35 KANKANADI 17:15 Mon, Wed
2618 MNGLA LKSDP EXP *MADGAON 19:25 KANKANADI 00:25
2619 MATSYAGANDHA EX *MADGAON 00:20 MANGALORE 06:15
6345 NETRAVATI EXP *MADGAON 22:40 KANKANADI 04:30
KR1 MAO MAQ PASS MADGAON 14:25 MANGALORE 20:45

Mangalore - Chennai
2602 CHENNAI MAIL MANGALORE 13:15 CHENNAI CENTRAL 05:25
6608 MAQ CHENNAI EXP MANGALORE 06:40 TAMBARAM 04:33
6628 WEST COAST EXP MANGALORE 21:30 CHENNAI CENTRAL 15:15

Hope this helps

Train No 7312 Vasco Chennai Express covers the distance of 1036 km in just under 22 hours. This is the only direct train between Goa and Chennai.

What trains are you thinking of taking (from the above list) to get from Goa to Chennai? (there's a good reason for asking)

What would be good timing for the return journey (including days of week)?

Are you looking at seeing anywhere in between Goa - Chennai - Goa, or is it only the best/fastest route you're interested in?

Hi steven
Thanks for the reply
I need to go to chennai often @once in 2 mths for urgent personal reason.

Been travelling by plane over the past 1 year and it has bored a hole in my pocket and henceforth i am determined never to travel by plane again if i can help it.

I am looking for the shortest and best route, not sure which days at the moment as the reason i travel is sudden or urgent

How are the stations kankanadi and mangalore? Most of margao to kakanadi trains reach around midnight +/- 4 hrs

Bye

OK, I'm not able to help much here then, it would take hours to list all the posibilities for both directions (mainly because a lot of the useful trains only run on particular days of the week).

I'll give you a few tips though. (but I worry about last minute availability of berths)

Click on the following website then follow the instructions.

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/src_dest_trns.html

Enter Source Station Code : MAO

Enter Destination Station Code : MAS

Enter Class : All Class

Then click 'get it'

This will get you the info for the direct train from Madgaon to Chennai, though it only runs one day a week.

Open a 2nd window, on one window search for trains from Madgaon to Mangalore, Guntakal, Yesvantpur (Bangalore)....

In the other window search for trains from Mangalore, Guntakal, Yesvantpur (Bangalore).... to Chennai.

Station codes you will need.....

Madgaon - MAO
Mangalore - MAQ (will also show trains to Kankanadi)
Chennai Central - MAS
Guntakal - GTL
Yesvantpur - YPR

Make sure you leave at least 2 hours for your connection.

Instead of changing at Kankanadi/Mangalore, take a train that goes further, this would help as you'd only need to get off your first train and get the next train from the same station, it may also offer more flexability, allowing you do do the overnight bit whenever you wanted.

Stations south of Mangalore where you could change trains include....

Kasaragod - KGQ
Cannanore - CAN
Calicut - CLT
Shoranur Jn. - SRR

Last I have been on Mangalore was some 7-8 years ago, so the info might be a bit outdated.
The main station is Mangalore, which had 2 platforms, and situated inside the city with Bus-station at walkable distance. There is waiting room in the station and you can expect very few people on the platform.

The Kankanadi is placed on outskirt of the city, and at that time had only one platform. During night it is bound to be deserted, but one can always find the stationmaster on duty and ask to be seated inside the office or request to open the waiting room. Transports from that station don't start before 0530 or 0600 in the morning.

Hope this helps
