I would also wonder whether the Indian numbers aren't so different because the truth is that, internationally, a woman is much more likely to be raped by someone she knows (boyfriend, husband, family member, male friend) than by a stranger on the street. Most of the rapes which are reported to the police in the West are of the stranger type. Indian women are traditionally a lot more cloistered than their western counterparts -- in some places I visited I rarely saw a woman out in public, even during the day. Thus much less chance of 'alone in a dark alley' stranger rape.
Also, since certain unsightly aspects of family life and married life are just NOT talked about, there's even less awareness of that most common type of rape. I don't think spousal rape is considered a crime in India; more like an oxymoron. |

No it is not the safest place
Hello,
Many single girls get harrassed. I wouldnt go as a a single girl if I was you. many rapes and murders and locals like following you to your hotel at night. Go to thialand or sri lanka. much safer. |

And don't realize that the "seven stages of love" that you see in Bollywood films does not apply when dealing with western women.

Goa is not as safe as some think, ive lived in Benaulim
South Goa for the last 9 years, and im afraid, crime is getting worse. I know of plenty of bag snatching, a few rooms have been broken into. But worst of all,2 seasons ago, a young Scandanavian lady was raped on the beach. Last season, i heard of 3 attempted rapes. No women deserves this, but i see so many young western women, having sex with the local boys and the out of state waiters. The Indian men, just think every western woman is up for it any time anyplace. Sorry but this is true. |

Almost, and coming out of the guest house, next to my flat in the morning.
Also the local boys and waiters keep a score chart, theyve told me about it. But being boys, some of it may be, made up. Just remerbered last season a western young lady, snogging a waiter, in a beach shack, they went down the beach, for whatever, a few of the other waiters also followed on. The Goan shack owner realised, went down the beach, found the waiters all over this young lady, who was crying and upset. The Goan shack owner, took the lady back to the shack, (saved her) in half an hour, she was snogging another waiter. Yes i was there. These boys from out of state, just cant work this all out, as Indian women dont do this, not what ive seen. Also when a bag gets snatched. You go to Colva police station to report the crime, and often to get a police report, for insurance. The police will neve put theft, only lost. Keeps crime figures down. One young English lad, went back to his guest house at night, door broken, everything stolen. When he went to the police for a report, to claim on his insurance, the policeman, wanted a 500 rp present before he would write the form out. This is India. Last monsoon in Baga a lot of apartments were robbed and when the apartment owners went to police station to report it the police put it down as they had all lost their televisions, dvd players and cash as Goa doesnt want bad news to come out and thats for every crime .
