I just tried to search on this - sorry if it's off topic.
I was wondering if I'm staying at Agonda will it be out of the question to do a day trip to North Goa - I would like to see the old town and also check out the markets etc. How long does it take to get there?

Assumably I can travel by bike or taxi to Palolem or any of the other closer beaches fairly easily as well if I like?

Ny "old town" I assume you mean Old Goa. From Agonda to Old Goa is abou 65 km which will take you about 1.5 hours by taxi or about 2.5 hours by bus. The market in Margao is about 27 km away. Agonda is not well connected by bus which means that you will either have to take a taxi or hire a scooter. If you have never driven a scooter then DON"T TRY LEARNING TO DO SO IN GOA.

After reading this thread, i now feel that i will be better off spending the festive period in a different area to Goa, purely because of the costs involved.

Does anyone have a recommendation of where i could stay over xmas and new year? I am open to pretty much anywhere in India, and would be booking my trains in advance to secure i can get to that specific city, town or resort during the mad rush.
I've been in Varkala several times for NYE. For me it has just the right mix of partying and dining options. But it is the peak of the peak season, so be sure to book your accommodation ahead.

Hi Mary

You may find what you are looking for once you be there. May be you can book in advance for first couple fo days. During this first days you may personally explore different accomodations to best suit your requirement...

i have done this many a times.and if you can spend some time you get what you want worth the money.

have nice trip
