My friend Caje Vaz aka Cajetan <cajetan_vaz@hotmail.com> came up with this list ... please note it's focussed at the local. These are his views:

For those of you in Goa who listen to FM Rainbow 105.4Mhz, some of this may be deja vu.
Last year I started highlighting my Top 5 lists on my Friday show 'Caje's Bhaji'.
Now that FM Rainbow is out of bounds for me, I thought it would be fun to share some of my Top 5 lists here.

This week I'll focus on food.
First the disclaimer.
None of my listing has any vested interest.
I pay for my own food and hence am not obliged to be charitable in my review.

So here goes...

My Top 5 individual dishes served in Goa:

1. Pomfret Caldeen - Viva Panjim, Fontainhas
2. Chicken Cafreal - Florentine's, Saligao
3. Prawn Curry Rice - Cafe Xavier, Mapusa
4. Crab Sukhem - Starlight, Arpora
5. Mushroom Blue Cheese Quiche - La Vin en Rose (Michelle's), Ingo's Sat Night Market

My favourite value for money places:

1. Anandashram - Near Panjim GPO (Fish Thali Rs 25/-)
2. Silva's - Miramar Circle (Cream Chop Bread Rs 20/-)
3. Cafe Samrat - Saligao (Chicken Xacuti Pao Rs 20/-)
4. All India Radio Canteen - Altinho (Tea Rs 2/-, Bhaji Pao Rs 5/-)
5. Cafe Prakash - Panjim (Food avoidable, Gossip priceless!)

Highly over rated hyped up joints:

1. Cafe Venite - Fontainhas (I'd rather have 10 fish curry rice delights opp at Anandashtam for the price of one pathetic pasta)
2. Britto's - Baga (Local food being tweaked to suit the palates of non-goans)
3. O'Coqueiro- Porvorim (poor service, mediocre food)
4. La Calypso's Beach Shack - Baga (Criminal waste of money for insipid fare)
5. Sousa Lobo's - Calangute (Unless you like Paneer Makhani and Aloo Gobi)

Places I'd love to treat friends:

1. Ernesto's -Club Vasco Da Gama (Don't miss the succulent steaks and Draught Beer)
2. Mum's Kitchen - Miramar (Eat with your eye's closed)
3. RioRico - Hotel Mandovi (Caldo Verde Soup, Pork Chops, Prawn Curry Rice with Kismur and Nallachi Kodi!)
4. Lila Cafe - Baga (Finest croissants, breakfast spread, spaetzle, roulade)
5. Martin's Corner - Betalbatim (Never a let down!)

Bon Appetite!
Cajetan Vaz

Have always been a big fan of this restaurant. Excellent food at reasonable prices.

Ihave heard good things about it from some friends but never been there, my impression was that it is expensive but when you say it is reasonably priced - what are reasonable prices

Any price cheaper than that charged by the beach shacks in Baga is reasonable. The Riorico is located in the Mandovi hotel which is a 3 star hotel but surprisingly the beer, whisky and cocktails are much cheaper at the Mandovi as compared to the shacks. The beach shacks in Candolim-Calangute-Baga are truly extortionate in their pricing.

There is not much around Varca. Joncy's beach shack on Benaulim beach about 2 km away is pretty good. Riorico is about 42 km from Varca.

Not been to cafe Xavier but I found Starlight in Arpora to be awful. The service was also very poor.
