[quote=mazha;517583]That was pretty cool, first time hearing that part of war history. I guess some of those German merchant folks may be around, who knows?

Fritz Dimsak, one of the guys on the WWII German ships here, ran a watch repair shop near the Panjim municipal garden (and the place where the High Court was then located) till not very long back. He died about a decade ago, if I recall right. FN

Interesting post Frederick. I did know he was used as a technical advisor in that Sea Wolves movie. But was unaware that he continued to reside & maintain a watch business in Goa up until his death.

There were actually three German men who continued to reside in Goa after the war ended.
The other two were Karl Tiegel and Karl Breitkopf who set up businesses in Vasco-da-Gama. Both these men married Goan ladies and their children used to attend school in Vasco. I used to attend the same school as them although I was much younger than them. Some of the children went back to Europe after finishing their studies while the others have continued working in Goa.

Just an annotation: There is a difference between "a German fighting in WWII" and a high rank SS officer responsible for a genocide....

Absolutely. Even though most of the posters haven't generalised, it's worthwhile restating that fact.

Yes certainly a big difference between the two. Nevertheless, given the WWII freeport-espionage scenario & the somewhat transient ensuing years that Goa has endured ..... the potential for the premise of this 'hoax' may not be as preposterous as one might first assume. Albeit any WWII veteran, especially the higher ranking officers, have to be getting towards the end of their lines at this time in mid 2008.

Certainly not, we all know about South American examples etc.

Any of the details provided in the original press release (cum email) were so blatantly and obviously and verifiably idiotic though, and deliberately so, that this makes it a joke indeed how any paper would fall for it. And then apparently started parroting each other one after the other, and providing ever more convoluted and completely fabricated details of their own accord, that were never there in the original release. Even claiming to have checked sources which they hadn't nor could have to a story that was never there, and meanwhile claiming that story to be their own (sometimes credited to some mythical "intelligence sources"), not gleaned from some e-mail "press release" they had received. Which was the single source of this story that never happened, after all.

A little gem, indeed, this hoax.
