Goa International Airport

Goa's International Airport - At last Goa will have it's own. Mopa International Airport, as the new airport will be called, will be built on Mopa Plateau, in the northern most taluka of Goa, Pernem. The construction would take over five years and cost approx 11.5 Billion rupees. The project would be a joint venture with the state, central and private parties as partners. This airport once completed would help to greatly increase the number of direct international flights to Goa. Currently the Indian Navy allows restricted use of Dabolim airport for civilian purposes.
Speaking on upcoming airport projects, Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said approvals have already been accorded “in-principle” for the new airports at Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, Mopa in Goa and Kannur in Kerala.

Also the proposal for a Greenfield airport at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh is under consideration, he said.

I don't know, this was all over the papers when I was there...

Of course we'll see how long it really takes to be finished and open up, and how many international airlines actually send flights there. Lots of Indian regions and cities have international airports, but that doesn't mean it's really convenient to fly there.

As someone who actualy lives in Goa,the fallout from a major drop in Uk tourists to the Costal belt will be enormous. The majority of Bars, shacks etc. rely on these tourists,so this high and mighty attitude of some people on this forum, who harp on about it won't matter are deluding themselves.

One example for you,we were down Majorda on New years day lots and lots of Indian tourists on the Beach BUT the shacks etc. were almost deserted as they bring their own drink and food to have their picnic on the beach.I agree there are alot of high spending Indian tourists in Goa, but they stay in the 5 star hotels and DO NOT spend there money localy but stay in the hotels.

Where i live there is one 5 star hotel which is trying to attract only these tourists because they spend all their time there, and the management is actively persuing this policy to the detriment of the local community. These are the facts as i see it on the ground. Goa will change, but unless the authorities address the infrastructure, garbage problems etc i can only see major problems ahead.

Now thats contradictory...as someone "who has been in Goa" reposted a couple of days back that 99% percent tourists in Five star and up market hotels were western tourists...

On second thoughts, how is it possible for a person like me coming from Delhi or Mumbai to get food and drinks with me for my entire trip !! I guess you need to be enlightened, please refer to other thread on this in which ground realities were mentioned...

Although, its hard to believe, some of these large scale construction projects are are being completed in record time. The Bangalore airport construction started in 2005 and the airport is scheduled to open ina few weeks. The difference, that there are private companies that are doing the construction. And, as long as the govt starys out of their way, they are delivering as promised.
