Goa in the last week of September 09! Mistake???

Hey guys
I have finalsed my plans for a vacation to Goa for end of September. I have booked the flights for goa. Now I am double minded as I don't know what to expect when I visit. The more I read and get info I am get the impression that a lot of places will be closed as the tourist season does not open till the start of November.

Last time I was in Goa in March 2008 and that time things were pretty decent. Restaurants, Beach Shacks, Markets, etc were open, The Ingo Saturday Night Bazar (SNB) was open. The shacks on Baga beach were quite happening (fireworks at noight, good music & good food). I liked Brittos alot too.
Now the more I read the more confused I get thinking that have I made a mistake???
What I am basically interested is in good food, a bear or two, visiting the beach shacks in the evening for dinner etc.
I am visiting with my wife and a 3 year old kid.
Further its not an option to cancel the tickets a the fare is not refundable.

Please advise as what to expect and what not to expect

It is still likely to be raining in September, the sea won't be safe for swimming or watersports and though there are a few clubs open all year round, most places will be closed.

On the plus side, it will be a lot cheaper, and really quiet, clean and scenic, with everything looking green and lush from the rains.

Unfortunately there will be no bears, they don't like the rain as their fur gets all soggy!

Also, no shacks, no fireworks, no night bazaars, few parties.

On the plus side, less rip-offs, no beggars, few foreigners, few tourist taxis, less pollution.

Plan on Panaji for sightseeing and shopping, Old Goa for cathedrals, Ponda for temples, Duhdsagar for waterfalls. Also plan on checking weather pattern before making next booking!

What are they? Never seen one in Goa...Oh you mean those things which used to exist at one time and had fairy tales written about them.

Funny thing is although we go in peak season (xmas) I would love to go during off peak time just to see what its like with out tons of tourists and see what its really like.

Do the bears just wander around like cows and goats?....

On my way home yesterday evening I encountered at least 20 groups of men and boys out trying to illegally catch the imaginary frogs. As it had not rained for some time, I hope a lot of them were attacked by bears...............
