If all the beach shacks have not already been pulled down under the supervision of the police and their hired mob, then you may be able to watch the dismantling of the remaining few shacks, except those which have the protectionof the starred hotels.
This is a good time to break your leg while falling over the cliff faces of the beach due to the 7 year presence of the polluting wreck "The River Princess", and the resultant coastal erosion and negative transformation of the beach. The debris from the iron ore mining barges should be washing ashore big time now in the always polluted and murky waters of the Goa coast, so be careful if treading amongst tar balls, syringes, broken glass, used condoms and other detritus. Use strong mosquito repellant since Goa is now a WHO recognised location for malaria and the more serious dengue fever. Expect there to be no nightlife since a Noise Pollution Act is in force to snub out any amplified or loud music after 10 p.m. There is no party/rave culture anymore, and drugs are now more commonly used to rape and murder helpless teenagers. You can always go to Tito's where Bihari tarts are available at negotiable rates, and HIV infection is without charge.Expect to may more for everything. Taxis will rip you off more than they usually do - they are extremely poor in their designer clothes, and have to make enough money so they can do fcuk all for the next 4 months. Please help them by begging them to take you anywhere at any price they care to imagine, even round and round and round, especially when it rains. Goa is finished, but enjoy it if you can. |

The tourist sector is a ghost town at this time. I remember arriving in Anjuna via Mumabi in May. Had been there in the winter when the place was lively. I was a little surprised to find nothing open. I was the only guest at a beachside lodge.
Once I caught up with an old friend and settled I found a gentle, sublime Goa - serene, green, moist and peaceful. So many chai and chat opportunities when the rain is bucketing down. I also managed to get to meet various of the permanent residents, something I doubt would have happened in the high season. |

I will never forget the blooming fire trees in May... so nice... and cashews and mangoes and jackfruits...
