Hi all, first thread on IM so sorry if it makes little sense or if its covered elsewhere. I've read up as much as I can on the weather in India during May and early June, and from what i can gather (please correct me if wrong) monsoon usually breaks late may around goa. So, does that mean before monsoon Goa's pretty dead because everyone is just preparing for the rain, or is it still lively? And how bad is travelling to and from Goa in the monsoon - could I still get a train to Tamil or would this be too hard with the rains? I really want to see Goa and the surrounding areas, but I'm in India for 6 weeks (May and June) and I understand only Tamil of the southern states is not as badly affected by the Monsoon during this time, so should I go to goa and then tamil or is it better to leave goa for another time, as it wont be at it's best then?

Hello Goose, and welcome to IndiaMike.com
![]() I don't know about Goa's climate, but I thought the SW Monsoon hit Kerala in early June and worked its way up from there. Tamil is language, and the state that it is spoken in is called Tamil Nadu --- just to put you right on that small detail. I can tell you about Chennai's climate... and if you like hot-and-humid then come there in May. High summer is mid-April to mid-June, with the temperature going into the 40s (Centigrade, of course). It doesn't usually rain until September, although it may well do so further south in TN. This year, we got some SW Monsoon in June, and have had regular showers ever since.

Hi Goose
I was out in Goa at the end of May last Year, the weather is a mixture of haze and sunshine. The Monsoon does kick in at the end of May, but the humidity is quite intense. Not very pleasant!

Not sure where I'm from

Where I've been (mostly eastern India), May is the hottest month of the year until the monsoon starts, and it's a welcome relief from the heat. May not apply to Goa tho.

Goa in May is relatively moderate compared to most. Quickly changes as you get away from the sea. Once the monsoon begins it is glorious, few tourists, green and lush.

I was in Goa in May last year and never again ,it was so humid and hot. Most of the shacks had shut and the 10 sun beds a shack rule was in .All the sellers had gone <good> My apartment was 91 degrees at night and in the day time with the fans on
I remember walking along Baga road and couldnt keep my shoes on cause of the sweat on my feet. I was told that it was more hot and humid earlier than usual . I was glad to get back to the UK on 22nd May . Must add i have just booked a flight to Goa again Feb till May, but will see how hot and humid it is to see if i stay till May . |
