Goa in June?
Is it a no go?
I don't mind it being somewhat hot and humid (I live in Hong kong), and I don't mind it raining a little (as long as there is some sunshine to dry the bones every day). I'm not into sunbathing all day on the beach or the party scene. I do like a relaxing time and great food. Will it be too hot and wet for me to have a decent holiday? Thanks for any info. |

Thanks for the link Annett.
It seems that August is better - on average 13 rainy days and 500 mm of rain. Can anyone tell me - does it rain all day, or just for a couple of hours in the afternoon? |

The Southwest monsoon starts in June, and goes on for 2 months. It is impossible to travel along west cost at this time.
Please avoid Goa. Try some other place instead. |

best in monsoon
i spent many months in goa last year during the monsoon, and i think its a damn fine time to be there. it doesnt rain all day, and it doesnt even rain every day. usaully you may see an hour or two of rain in a day, but its no hardship, in fact its a beautiful time to be in goa.
everything is lush and green, the thunderstorms create an electric atmosphere, and also the place aint overrun by idiots on enfields!!! okay so you cant go swimming, but i think thats a small price to pay! i myself will be going back to goa this july without any second thoughts.. ![]() |

See Drumbrake,
As Katora says, Goa is beautiful at all times of the year. Even during monsoon, it does not rain daily, but, it may rain....it does not rain through out the day, but it may rain.... That being said - it is great when it rains, when i am in my home. I will adjust. In Goa, if you are a tourist, you will mostly hire 2 wheeler to commute around the place. So, it is raining, you have to wear a raincoat....and may have to stop somewhere for shelter....if it pours hard. Also, u may have to postpone ur plan of visiting some place....if it starts pouring. So, for a tourist, this kind of weather....hourly and daily un-predictable types can be a nuisance. But, it is a guarantee that it will rain. If u r the kind of guy, who loves it when it rains, then, going to Goa in the peak of the monsoon....is a great idea. Pls proceed. |

I was born in this place and I can say without any hesitation that June is a month to be avoided in Goa. There is not only heavy rainfall at this time of year but there are frequent power outages on a daily basis. The mosquitoes will eat you up at night and you will not get any sleep.

another example is himachal in winter, i think that is by far the best time to be there, but not many people agree. we all like different places for differnt resaons yes! and again i say the rains aint that heavy, they never stopped me from gettin about. the mozzies can be a problem at anytime of the year, and just cos the power goes off sometimes hardly makes me cry myself to sleep. i agree totally with what lonelyaztec has written above |

As someone whos lived 99.9 % (which equals 22 years) of my life in Goa, Id say Goa is fabulous in the rains. It DOES not rain all day. When it does, its NEVER cold. When it doesnt, the air is clear and heavy with the smell of earth and chlorophyll.
Goa in the rains can make for superb pictures, walks in forests(save for the leeches : 0 ), walks by beaches watching fierce waves and waters, and meeting locals who arent caught up with making money off the tourists. Drumbrake, if you arent into the parties and bumming around the beach, you may love Goa in the monsoon. There'es an unmistakable magic in the air. (This here is not mere romantiscizing) If you're into good food, the glitch with Goa in the monsoon is the lack of seafood, of which there's a glut in the rest of the year. Many locals may refrain from eating fish in the monsoon. And the govt bans trawlers from going out to sea. A. Because of safety reasons. B. To allow for breeding of fish. All this said- fish is nt the only good thing about Goan food. So, panic not, you wont starve. |

Umm..And the rain in more ways than one, cleanses Goa of some trash that maybe present at other times in the year. :0)

Ive been in Hongkong on a day when it rained, and Goa id say is not as sticky and humid when it rains.Theres certainly a bit more movement in the air.

Monsoon or bust!
I recall meeting a tourist couple in Bali, Indonesia during the monsoon. They were traveling around the world following the thunderstorms. What a great way to see the world outside tourist season! What would you rather have, tourists or leeches? I'll take the leeches. They are great for lowering your blood pressure! Leeches are not recommended for hemophiliacs. Leeches are great conversation starters: they have a mouth at both ends!
The first time you go to a place it probably should NOT be monsoon season. Save the monsoon visit for your second or greater visit to Goa. I have been to Bali 5 times during the monsoon. Only once (the first time) did I go to Bali in the peak summer dry season (July-August). The monsoon season was far better. Eric Frater's "Chasing the Monsoon" is a great book about the onset of the monsoon along India's west coast. A word of caution: during heavy winds beware of palm fronds and coconuts crashing down. Never take a nap under a coconut tree. |

I haven't been to Goa during monsoon since I was 12, but the majority of my cousins who live there say it's their favorite time of year. I am planning my next trip during monsoon time to check out how well the waterproofing schemes for our house are working. Winds apparently can be strong, but predictable - always from the west.
