Goa in August
Some people even love the monsoon in Goa; tour operators from abroad are sometimes advertising this month as "the best" - meaning "the cheapest"....
I would say: "Better not." |

late August is better
I've been in Goa in each and every month of the year. July is definitely the month which has the classic monsoonal rains. It can actually get quite cold by the sea with strong winds and torrential rain; and the strong onshore winds blow all sorts of crap onto the beach - not a time for a leisurely swim.
Early August is like this as well, but by the end of the month the rain (usually, El Nino may alter the climate this year) has reduced to a couple of hours per day - often in the afternoon. The sea will still be turbid, though - it isn't until the middle of September that it begins to clear. You'll have to be a bit resourceful about finding food (not too much of a problem - you can eat in the "bars" used by locals) as none of the tourist shacks will be open or even built. Allow for more mosquitoes (bring a net or buy it locally) and problems in drying washed clothes. I found light, synthetic things to be best. In the paddy fields you'll be treated to the sounds of frogs and - at night - flashing fireflies. Guess what? You won't see a single tout in August - although they flood in once the weather gets drier, and as one of the few tourists on the beach then you will be the human equivalent of fly-paper. |

hey there Toddeck
I will be going in August too!! Its the only month I can go, and am looking forward to it. sounds like a bit of a nightmare trying to find food and accommodation, but getting away from the touts sounds perfect. and it`ll be even cheaper. |
