The journey by train during the day is quite pretty. I don't think the bus is as scenic.

Bus Service Info?

Is there a daily bus? I am thinking of going on Jan 3rd (from goa to hampi). Any info on the best bus service, rates, where to catch the bus, what to avoid, etc. will be appreciated..

This information may be a bit dated but there were private overnight buses that left from Panjim on a regular basis. You can buy the tickets at the travel agents there. There were also buses that left in the morning from the bus station in Panjim. I think they may leave daily. I don't remember any specific times, only that I was looking into taking the bus and took the train (which only went twice per week) instead. Good luck

My understanding is that the train actually goes four times a week, not twice, so you may not find it too difficult to get a berth/seat. Steven Ber is your "guru" on this one -- do a search of his posts and he will undoubtedly have all the right information for you.
