Goa for XMas & New Year - Is turning up on spec Madness?

Dear All,

I am planning to stay in Goa from around the 23rd Dec to 1st of January. Obviously it is a very popular time. Is it completely crazy to turn up without a booking? I am travelling alone for this stretch and I have some leaway on costs, although the sky is not the limit.
Any advice?

David

PS Is it difficult to get there at this time of year?

From Calcutta / Kolkata with a week to get there

Basically I have 5-7 days to get from Kolkata to Goa. I will have already passed through Delhi / Jaipur / Agra / Varanasi. Any ideas on a good route? Are all trains booked up at this time of year?

Needless to say I am the most disorganised man in the World.

Regards,
David

Sorry, got to dash, will reply later.

Check the following post for train problems, the detailed train is still not showing up on the railways website, yet the old one will stop operating from the 1st of next month. (so bookings should be OK)

HI

I went to goa with a group of friends about that the same time as you are going last year - it took me about 2 hrs to find sonewhere to stay - and that was for 4 people.
You shouldnt have a problem finding a place but if your budget allows can you afford a flight?
it will allow you more time in wonderful goa.
But having said that the trains are an experience in itslft and not to be missed.
what part of goa you travelling to?

Am going to risk it? Where to?

I think I am going to wing it and just turn up. I could fly but I have a week to get there as I mentioned. A friend of mine is flying home when we get to Calcutta and I am continuing on alone.

Any advice on which part of Goa to stay? I am very prone to heading out on the town but I don't necessarily want to inject herion into my eyeballs or that sort of thing.

I don't want to be stuck in some resort outside the main thoroughfare (if such a thing exists). Basically, I am not too picky about accomodation and am not overly concerned about seeing the 'real thing' by living in an ecohut built by indigenous tree monkeys. I'll try to see some old Goa but my main goal is having a good time, as it is the end of my trip,

Any advice welcome,
David
