Talking Goa: Barclays Debit Card?

Hi guys,

i have read lots of threads about people bringing travellers cheques to Goa - im sure last time i went i just had my barclay debit card - i checked with the bank and it should only cost me £25 to withdraw £700.

does anybody else just use their debit card and do you know if any ATMs? i will be staying in Calangute.

i will also be elsewhere in India for a week or so and again - if anybody knows of a place called Jabalpur could you let me know if you have used a cash card there before - again, it's been years since ive been and i cant remember what i did last time.

Thanks a lot.

Goa, Jabalpur, Barclay's Card

Hi !,

You can use ATMs accepting Visa and Maestro debit cards in Goa as well as Jabalpur. Barclays as such doesn't. have branches though

You will be able to withdraw cash no problem but inform Barclays that you are going to India on holiday. I forgot to inform Barclays and for security reasons they block the transactions. So i had to go to a cash exchangers and sign for the transaction while it went through. You don't need that hassle.

If you have time get a Nationwide debitcard - they charge nothing.

But bear in mind that theory and reality are often quite different things in India. Take IRCTC. (Need I say more?).

In theory, my debit card should work in any machine in India displaying the appropriate logo. In practice, my card was sometimes declined and I had to use another card.

So don't rely upon ATMs working when you need them to. Keep enough spare cash to see you through another day or two. Pay hotel bills with your credit card if you can, to reduce the need for cash. And always carry a spare card.

Problem is, i dont have a credit card or another bank account. i think i will take some English money (or do you suggest Travelelrs cheques? - i have never used these)

where would i get the best exchange rate - would i be losing much money?

I would take travellers cheques in £50 denominations, most places here charge 1% which isn`t bad really and if anything happens you will get them back, worth the piece of mind IMO. Take your card as back up also, most places in Goa offer the same rate and its not worth the hassle of trying to save a few rupees here and there when cashing them.
There is a cash machine just outside the Airport in Goa so draw about £20 out to tide you over till you can cash them.
