It may be difficult for the present Goa government to remain in power if does not effectively counter the threat against the tourists.

I agree. In any case govt's in Goa are liable to be brought down even by one or two MLAS. As it has a very small assembly. I think it has seen a highest number of CM's in such a short time.

Todays Herald had a statement that implied that 50% of Goa state budget depended on tourism, anyone know if that is correct?

Maybe we should all stop the conversation on this thread and let it fall out of sight where it belongs

One way to do that would be to stop contributing and thereby bringing it back to top

.. and the Goa government has filed charges against some people in the GMAS for threatening tourists.

The chief minister has made a statement on TV saying tourists are welcome.

Tourists to leave Goa by 27the Dec

Ihave replied to a post on Trip Advisor Goa Forum today. I have friends who live in Goa and they are not unduly worried by this atricle in the newspaper. Unless I am told otherwise by the FO I will still be going to Goa in February.

Moderator Note

Valid concerns expressed in various posts are noted.

We are not keen on members who come here to push one agenda only, and will take necessary action if we consider it to be needed.

The basic information in this thread is something that, it seems, travellers may need to be aware of. On that basis it has remained in this forum.

We do not seek to exclude controversy. Far from it, there is plenty on the site. It is not, however, our primary purpose, and threads that turn into, for example, political arguments, are moved to our off-topic forum.

This forum is not available to new members, and it is also not accessible to search engines --- thus we avoid people finding their pet-rant topic here via Google and joining us just to mud sling.

Activists spoil Goa New Year party for tourists

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/activist.../54999-26.html

Quote:
Panaji: The party might end well before the New Year in Goa this time. India's most favoured tourist destination could be off limits to tourists.

Activists and political parties opposing commercial development in the state are telling tourists to get off the beaches or face a violent agitation.

Thousands of tourists who have already reached the state for the last “happening” event of the season have been given a December 28 deadline by the anti-SEZ organisations to leave the state.
So what to do cancel plans to Goa.
Anybodies views and advice

Wow this is great my post has been merged with this thread. Now this thread has a become a political debate.
My context was to ask for advice as is it really safe to go to goa now. Not to rake a political debate
But since we are at it :-P
I gotta tell you Sez are bad.
Sez are few big companies making lot of money. It is like a lion making a kill in the jungle and the hyenas and jackals eating the remaining. Apart from that no one else benifits.
Metaphorically speaking lets say the lion decides to remove all vegetation from the jungle so that it can easily hunt its prey, the hyenas jackals and vultures support this move as they get to eat the leftovers. The larger inhabitants of the jungle end up becoming prey or they dont have a natural habitat they have been living in from years and they suffer.
That is the same situation with Sez. The worst part is the Sez is after agricultural land only.
To understand why they are doing this you should watch the documentary "future of food" search for it in google video or you tube and on any torrent site that has documentaries. You will learn that there is a big conspiracy by large food corporation to destroy contemporary agriculture in all developing and third world nations and take control of the food market. They then want to supply Gentically modified food crops grown on fertilizers and control the food market. They are doing it now Search google video/youtube of "the great african scandal". See what has become of Ghana.
The only difference being that what "they" did in Ghana they cannot do in India so Sez is the a great way to destroy agriculture and self dependency of India in the name of economic development.

Coming back to the point any advice on wether it would be a good idea to visit goa just of a quiet new year. I am not going to attend any Famous rave parties or be in a regular spots like tittos.
Please let me know or else I will be opening another thread just for this purpose. I want some travel information.
I think we should start a seperate section for political discussions. we have a lot of it on IM nowadays.
