GMAS to tourists: "Leave Goa by Dec 27"

Trouble Brewing in Goa

Dec 23, 2007 - In a press conference held today in Panjim, Goa's Movement Against SEZs (GMAS) has asked all tourists to stay away from Goa after Dec 27. Those tourists already here have been warned to leave the state by Dec 27, as things could take an ugly turn following the Goa govt's refusal to cancel all the approved and notified SEZs in the state. For weeks GMAS has tried peaceful means to get the govt to rescind the SEZs but without success. GMAS also issued a warning to the Goa govt that the government alone will be held responsible for the consequences of any untoward incidents.

18 SEZs (Special Economic Zones) have been proposed for tiny Goa, and they threaten to turn this once-beautiful paradise into a congested concrete nightmare. Key members of the ruling govt have received huge commissions from the real estate mafia to approve these SEZs. The people of Goa are now rising in protest and things are expected to rapidly heat up in the coming days and weeks.

I was at the press conference which was held a couple of hours ago
and this is my own report. The news should be out in the local and
national papers tomorrow.

My guess is that they do not want tourists to be adversely
affected given the likelihood of any untowards incidents
leading to violence. Who knows, there could be bandhs,
road blocks, disruption in traffic etc. They also want the
tourists to stay away to bring pressure on the Goa govt.

GMAS warns tourists against visiting Goa from Dec 28 2007

Hi group. I am getting a little worried about some breaking news that has just hit the web.

Here is the link to the site http://news.webindia123.com/news/Art...23/854801.html

There is a few different articles on the net and these can be found by putting something like GMAS and Goa into a search engine. Can someone tell me simply what people should expect if they are there at this time.

Seasons Greatings to you all

An interesting low level terrorist threat. Political brinkmanship of the most cheap sort. Doubt it is more than the most threadbare of bluffs..

Is a foreign national eligible to apply for his very own SEZ? I would want to have one, of course only for convenience of Indiamike members.

I am sure me and more informed Indians on the board would not have heard of this GMAS things before..

Or have I been just ignorant..

By the way its impossible to do such a thing without the backing of a political party..

What are they going to do? Single out tourists, both domestic and foreign, across the State? Ask them for their passports or other ID? (Note, Indians are not required to carry any ID with them all the time)

Not saying there can't be disruptions, but seems more likely they are hoping to scare people away than anything else.

I have an industrial tools supply business with almost 60 - 70 % of my clients being industries in Goa. Cipla, which is at the centrestage of this controversy is one of my client. The main problem why this GMAS has come up is - the jobs generated by this SEZ's or other industries are grabbed up by non goans. This I believe is the single largest factor of their agitation. Workers from outside Goa are ready to work at lower wages.

So Ronak, can you tell us how you think this will or will not affect foreign tourists locally? (I'm only asking for the interest of the board, Goa is nowhere high on my wishlist, although I wouldn't mind at all visiting some day.)
