Freedom of Press in India or lack of rather!

TV stings: SC to examine motive

It says it all- It's not in the interest of the courts or the government to have a free press. Pretty hard odds if the press ever won this battle! Seems to the neutral observer that it's well and truly stitched up even before the games begin!

THese days the SC here is giving bold verdicts and i hope the trend continues and Sc allows a free press in India.
I am not sure why SC is checking the motive ,but am guessing this may have something to do with a couple of stings where girls are used as a part of the deal.(

The Indian press has to be one of the bravest under the circumstances it operates. For the supreme court, it is easy to 'give out bold verdicts' as there is no one to challenge their verdicts( a bit like the story where the emperor had no clothes and yet everybody applauded his fine sense of dress taste). How could you explain restrictions as freedom otherwise?? This is the perverse logic of some in the Indian upper class. Also the statement made by the supreme court does not make a comment about girls being used- it says that they are going to check and see if there was any financial gain to be made by the news channels? Maybe they want a cut of that too!!

There can be two sides to these sting operations. Sting operations had been a medium in the past for the press to gain more TPRs.

If you show the bacon to the dog, it will follow you -- now would you accuse the dog of following the bribe or would you accuse yourself for showing the bacon?

In short I do think its not always public service thats intended in these sting operations.

There is such a thing called "Contempt of the Court". It's fine to criticise but it's rash to insult the judiciary of a sovereign nation.

The Indian Media is far more independent and bias-free than some of the ëmbedded journalism" that's par for the course in some parts of the world.

The Supreme Court is concerned because some of the recent "Sting Operations"have been proven to be fabricated.

There was no link to the article about the sc checking the motives and i just guessed albeit incorrectly that it was regarding the sting operations where girls were also supplied as there was a huge furore at that point of time regarding the moral credentials of the journalistic fraternity.
It was a bit cynical to say that sc needs a cut in that deal too but you meant it as a joke i guess.
It would be nice if you can post the link to this article .

Quite right. There's bad aspect of sting operations, which SC has pointed out.

SC has questioned the motive behind such sting operations. One motive is TPR of Channels and other could be money , yes simple blackmailing. Sting operations are on air after lapse of some weeks or sometimes months, what could be done (negotiations ??) in this time period is
very easy to guess.

One of these sting operations was to unearth the supremely imporant fact whether a casting couch existed in Bollywood .It would interest only a movie buff . Most of these channels have thier own political views which is fine .But the question of motive arises when they attack the political leaders from the parties which the news channels oppose and whether other political parties where involved in sting up the sting operations .All are equally corrrupt in the public's eyes but conduct a sting operation against all parties irrespective of the channels political ideologies.

That was a joke. See- Thats what I love about Indian people- you have the same sense of humor as the West (unlike the Pakistanis who think we are all out to demonise them) However, India could well benefit from its people (and news channels) pushing and setting new boundaries for an ever evolving yet ancient civilisations. India- possibly- is the future conscience of this world. Do not let a few dictators or dictatorial decisions deviate you from the path.

Sorry, but need to add- The reason you have such a noisy democracy is the reason you will be far ahead of China in the global stakes. Give it time and India will be at the forefront of a new civilisation based on the power of knowledge. So let there be news channels with their own viewpoints and agendas, and also newspapers and also people

We might as well give up now then

Democracy? This is just a small part of the 'democracy' that was happening on ky doorstep last week. many people arrived at polling stations to find their votes already cast, many people voted as paid. Many government staff on polling station duty found it so traumatic they said they would never do it again

Well- corruption does exist. however, if it was all corrupt- you would never have seen a change in government ever-plain logic!!. Sceptics need to look at the overall results and not make the mistake of individual area assesment.

India could certainly use more freedom in publishing.

I read recently that some bloggers have been banned in India by the government. Here is a link that I found.

This blogger claims it has to do with the Mumbai terrorist attack. (HERE)

Does anyone know anything about this?

It happened. It was clumsy, blunt, not properly targeted and (wonder of wonders) it got unhappened again...
