Actually, early January charters to Goa should be fairly easy to get, and relatively inexpensive. Mid-December thru' new years is the crazy time and tickets/hotels etc will be difficult to book and expensive. Hopefully someone can give you the name of a good London consolidator to check for tickets -- like mala, I haven't found the internet a cheap place for air tickets.

For mala, a flight to Mumbai mid-december shouldn't be difficult, and september should be fine for picking up a ticket -- however, if you plan on travelling to goa before new years, it would be prudent to book your train or air ticket around the same time as it will be very difficult getting a reservation on short notice in December.

aeroflot?

I saw some crazy cheap prices for Goa charters from London on the Net, when I was thinking where to go during Easter weekend it was cheaper to fly to Goa then say to Marrakesh

that said, it was April 2004 and bears no relevance to 2005... but I am sure charter flight to Goa is prob 30% cheaper than scheduled fare to Delhi or Mumbai...

another idea: I heard from an Indian friend that last winter Goan hotels were 60% booked by Russians - Russia and India gov'ts had struck some kind of a deal promoting tourism in Goa - me thinks Aeroflot may have many scheduled flights to Goa, don't ignore this option too

it's the same logic as chartered flight is always cheaper than scheduled flight by a traditional airline (ie non-budget/low-cost airlines)

same applies to Europeans travelling to Spain, Italy etc for holidays

there are more restrictions on chartered flights tickets though

Alright, volga, thanks! I'll look into that. What is the typical price (in pounds, if you like) from London to Goa?

I found from London to Mumbai, the prices are no cheaper than 550 pounds.
when I did my quick search for April the prices I saw around GBP 350-380 - but I didn't try to book this was the price quoted on the website

do a google.co.uk on charter flights to goa, the first site I came up with is
http://www.charterflights.co.uk/india/Goa.htm

there is phone number there I suggest you start off by calling them to find out availability/price situation

good luck

I've used kelkoo.co.uk a few times to compare flight prices:

Booked myself a November Heathrow/Delhi flight with Gulf Air for GBP420.00 incl tax

mala: your 'well-known' carriers not necessarily all that great (hint Air India and most American airlines). The following link is to a site that conducted a 'favorite airline' poll of its members (mostly Asian frequent flyers) and the results were similar to a discussion here on Indiamike -- 1. Cathay Pacific 2. Singapore 3. Thai 4. Emirates and 5. Sri Lankan. Aeroflot came last .

From europe, Emirates and Kuwait are usually both inexpensive and highly rated.

checked 'goa charters' on Google just now, and the first item was a list of charters from GB, with prices, thru' next spring. I've never dealt with the company, but the following will at least provide a point of reference.

Flights

Went to Trailfinds and they quoted £358 + taxes (about £50 I believe) return from Heathrow to Mumbai travelling with
Kuwait Airlines.
Emirates are charging £583

Mumbai to Goa with Jet Airlines is £116 return.

Cheapest charter is £399 from Manchester and £358 from Gatwick, at the moment and you have to buy a return ticket.

I've been looking on the internet for a flight in Jan and in the end I popped into Lunn Poly travel agents and got a direct return to goa from london for £330. I'm not even using the return flight but seem ed the best deal. also found an indirest flight for 50 cheaper but that was to Bombay.
