Fishing in Goa

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to do any fishing off the beaches in Goa.I will be there in April and would love to do some if possible.Im not sure if it is an acceptable practice for a tourist or not.

I guess you probably could though I have never seen anyone doing it. Would be best to bring your own rod and reel and to try not and hook the small dolphins swimming around.

There are also fishing cruises available in a few places also, I don't remember the prices right off the top of my head, but I don't think it was terribly expensive.

Fishing

Go to Calangute or Baga and ask the fishermen if they'll take you along when they go out. They're gone all night, though ...

gone fishin'

On the beach between Mandrem and Arambol (along the northern coast of Goa) you'll see many traditional wooden fishing boats that spend the whole night at sea. In the evening as the sun is going down there are also many fishermen working in teams from the shore using big nets... some people go in the water, others pull on the nets from shore. I've never seen any foreigners helping them but I'm sure they'd love some help.

When I was in Om Beach (near Gokarna, south of Goa) I met a guy who made a fishing rod out of bamboo. The trick seems to be to make the rod extremely long, so that you can sit on the rocks and still get some distance out into the water. He mostly caught little fish, so set your expectations appropriately.

You can always buy hooks around town but you'd do well to bring some good quality ones from home as well... I don't know the quality of the fishing gear in India but it's probably better at home.
