fam of 4 ... 6 months in goa

My wife, two kids and I plan to move to Goa for 5-6 months this coming winter (it's very cold in BC in the winter). I have a few questions and any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it realistic to expect to find a house rental 5/6 month rental for 8000 Euro's (13,000 CAD) ?

Is it realistic to expect to live on 500 EURO per month (for all non-rent expenses) ?

Does anyone know of a glass blowing supplier anywhere within the state of Goa ?

We plan to leave Canada in November or early December (at the latest) and MUST be back in canada by April. Which puts us there over the peak tourist season (worried about prices).

Thank you

Welcome to IM, bcglass!

I can't comment on the goa part specifically (I've never been), but I can give some insight on the glass part. I'm a glassblower (furnace work) "on hiatus" from the glass world

What exactly are you looking for (furnace, torch work, bangle making)? My former glass-partner did extensive studies in India so I will pick her brain tomorrow for you to see if she has any info on glass in Goa.

borosilicate lampworking.

I will bring a torch and a few small tools with me if I can find someplace to order borosilicate rod and tube.

It would be great to be able to work on the torch while away from my shop.

Ok so I know nothing about the glass blowing part but about expenses, I think, the bad news is you would need to increase your monthly expenses a little but the good news is that you would find accommodation much cheaper. In my experience one can easily rent a furnished two bedroom house in the capital of Goa Panaji for about 25,000 rupees per month (that’s around 600 Canadian dollars per month so 3600 Canadian for 6 months) if you go outside the main town a little the accommodation would be much cheaper. On the non acco expenses if you promise not to splurge!! A 1000 dollars per month should suffice - which would include eating out quite often but not everyday. At least that is my experience.
I am sure there are others more knowledgeable who would have more to say on this. But then everyone has a different life-style!!

Hi,

Rs.8,000 can find you a decent place outside the monsoon season but during the monsoon you look at 12 to 15,000. If you want two rooms near the beach.

I would say the $500 is a little low but if you stick to Indian food and your kids are happy with the beach, you will be fine.

With regards to glassblowing, there is nothing to my knowledge in Goa. However, Mario, from Coffee Garden in Calangute is into specialty glass manufacturing (jewelery, tiles, plates, art,etc.). Might be worth contacting him.

I think you have that the wrong way round Birds. It costs more to rent in the season Nov-Mar. There is a magazine and website called Homes and Estates which offers properties to rent. Prices vary, do you want to be in north or south goa, next to the beach or inland, house or appartment. You can rent a house in north goa for around 20,000rps a month, furnished. I think the south would be more. Beware of renting an appartment in a block where everyone else comes for 2 weeks, could be noisy. Living expenses depend on whether you want to eat out a lot or cook for yourself. For around 3-4,000rps per month you can have a cleaning girl who will also cook for you. If you rent a house you will need a nightwatch if you plan to go out in the evening.

Hey bcglass -

So my contact got back to me and didn't have any suggestions about borosilicate suppliers in/around Goa. Doesn't mean there aren't any - she specializes more in handicrafts in the north. Good luck on your quest! Any chance you've seen the "Glass India" videos where they are throwing the pipes around in the shop? I swear that video gave me nightmares for weeks!!!
