I'm in Benaulim. Its calm here... but after seeing it, I am not riding a scooter. I'll rent a car if I have to... or walk, and take the bus. Its just a bit too chaotic, and having never drove a 2 wheeler I just ain't gonna do it.

Ok now just to clarify.. i dont have anything against tourists renting bikes on holiday. Yes i do have a problem with those trying to experiment on goan roads. The other day i was driving from club cubana in arpora towars anjuna only to see three europenans all soaked in blood trying to remove their bikes from the middle of the road. I stopped to assist but they did not want any help..drunk and high these guys had no clue what had just happened. Now would you endorse this behaviour !

Drinking and driving is a no no in any country, but driking and TRYING to drive is absolute madness
Yeah take the bus its much safer ..and what about taxis ..have we forgotten they exist too .. a few ruppes more would end up saving your life >>

cheers !!

Wink

The bus is where its at. 5 rupees from Benaulim to Margao. Connect with the people a little: brave the bus! Honestly, its not bad at all. The windows make the heat more bareable than walking.

I rented a bicycle for a month recurring. It is good for the beach and the roads around Benaulim. I don't feel unsafe here, on my bike. I can bicycle in, get some rice and lentils and some sauce packs, etc. and bicycle home. Dodge woman with large object on head, dodge cow, move over for car/cycle/scooter, left, right, left... home. Its nice. I love to cycle here... because I love to cycle, and I love it here

I saw this white guy on a motorcycle stop to try and lecture a Goan woman about anticipating when driving. Hahaha, it was funny.

Taxis always want too much money, and I'm disinclined to pay them. Better to save that money for food/tea/:beer:

Also, between walking, swimming and bicycling, and the way the heat kills the appetite, and the food is good and relatively "light," I think I've dropped 10 pounds in 10 days in India. Not just water weight either, I'm seeing it around the belly. Another guy I talked to was the same way. He dropped a "stone," whatever that british thing is

Goa: the World's Largest Fat Farm. Come to Goa fat... leave fit. I'm telling you man, they should market this place in America.

In Goa the key to using a taxi is to negotiate the price to be paid before you board the cab.
There is no taxi meter and as a result there is plenty of room for negotiation. The taxis which are parked outside the 5 star hotels are generally speaking quite expensive and are best avoided. What type of tourist taxi are you looking for? Air conditioned or non air conditioned?
A/C taxis will charge you 40-50% more than the non-A/C ones. If you want to hire a taxi every day then I can arrange a Maruti Esteem taxi for you.
The advantage of using this car is when you are finding the heat to be too much then you just tell the driver to put the air conditioning on and you can make a note of the reading on the odometer and you will be charged for the A/C only for those kilometeres where the A/C was switched on. Otherwise the A/C will be kept off and you will be only charged the regular non-A/C rate. This particular driver is very good and the taxi is very new.

It all depends on your hotel and what kind of taxi operators that they are dealing with. Keep in mind that the hotel that you are staying in is a little bit out of the way and because of this there won't be too many taxis in the vicinity of the hotel. If you go to the Tourist taxi stand in Vasco or Margao there are hundreds of taxi operators with whom you can negotiate a reasonable price. In Majorda this option will not be available to you.

A 3rd world country where cows have right of way isn't the place to learn! Heh.
