Elephants in Goa?

We're travelling to Goa in November with Jewel In The Crown. They offer a trip to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary which takes in a village tour, jungle walk, cultural entertainment, a visit to a spice plantation etc. It's an overnight trip and apparently the highlight is riding an elephant. It costs GBP72 for an overnight trip, which seems to be quite a lot.

The main thing we would like to do is to see the elephants. Has anyone any idea whether it's possible to organise a day trip to the sanctuary with a taxi driver? Or whether there are any other wildlife sanctuaries in Goa that we could visit to see some elephants?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions
