Cycles on planes

Does anyone have any experience of taking bikes on planes from UK to Goa? Ours are full size but fold in half.

I met a lady from the US in Bharatpur in India and she carried her cycle on plane but it folded much more neatly, she said she could put it inside her suitcase and attach the wheels to the suitcase too. I know this may not help much but still I thought of replying. And welcome to Indiamike.

Depends on the airline. Some airlines will carry one bicycle free of charge while other airlines will charge you.

After working on the ramp for a good year or two, all I can say is this: if you life your bike, put it in a hard box. Your bike will be shoved, yanked, stacked, and dropped. Rampies express their anger on improperly packaged bikes.

Hard box? I was going to use a tarpaulin, wound round with duct tape! I did it before, going somewhere else, and it was okay.

I've discovered Monarch charge £15 extra each way.

Many airlines requires you to put the bike in a box, check with them before you fly. If you need a box, any bike shop will have plenty of boxes, usually free.

Well at least take off the pedals and notwithstanding potential damage to your bottom bracket and trueness to your wheels, you should be good. You can rent hard boxes from outdoor recreation centres, namely those at universities.

That's a bargain. UAL charges $90 per direction.
