Check out if they charge commission before you get sucked into a good exchange rate. It can make a massive difference

The rate I was refering to " very high 80's to the £' would be the type you'd get for cash around the calangute/candolim area from one of the bureu de change type 'jewellery shops. It's always several rupees more than the official rates,,,,,,,,,,

right now, the sign on the cybershop wall says 83.00 with no commission. You'd get a couple of rupees more at the State Bank of India in Mapusa if you don't mind the half hour wait.

Thumbs up

cam - are you in India or is that a financial insitiution rate? Last I was in India in 2001 the rate was about 24. So there has been a strong appreciation ...

Baldy: the local moneychangers here only deal in 'the big 3'. Today's rates are $44.30, Lb 83.15, and euro 58.10 The State Bank of India in Mapusa doesn't have a rate for the Australian $, so you would probably have to deal with a money-changer while in north Goa, and they generally use the Thos Cook buying rate which is a couple of points off the mid-rate.

For any Canadians interested, last week the State Bank rate on CDN tc's was 37.40, while the money changer rate was only 34.50.

There's no such thing as THE rate, unless two currencies are officially pegged (and the rupee isn't). Rates published in newspapers or on the internet are averages of various banks. Rates also differ if you are buying or selling or paying with a credit card.

In other words, the rate is whatever the institution you're dealing with says it is.

The rates on http://xe.com/ are the current interbank rates. Of course you won't get the same but it's a good indication. Nice to know you're not getting totally ripped off Commission is what to watch out for
