cheap hotels in Goa
I am looking for a cheap hotel in goa with basic facilities like a clean loo, preferably some thing that is so cheap that it does not need advance booking. I am thinking of early january - 6th, 7th around that time. I am arriving by air , so any thing in that area will be welcome. Are paying guests a possibility ? Need this place for maximum three days.

i'm considering goa, at least for awhile before venturing onwards to other parts of southern india, which i've yet to explore. seems that goa may be expensive from some of the things that i've read on here. if one were to stay for a month are there reasonable priced rooms?
When is high season?

Where in Goa are both of you wanting to stay? At a particular beach? When I was there I stayed in Panjim for a while and really enjoyed my stay.

I was last in Goa in 2003. I paid 100 INR a night in the south in Patnem. I have not been there since 1990, so I expected to pay alot. To my surprise, I paid the same prices I paid 13 years earlier! I was there from febuary 2003 to may 2003. As far as high season, I suppose Dec. -Jan, is the high season, but there are others more knowledgeable then me on this answer. I think I know a little about you from reading your post's Lotus and I think you would like Patnem! It's right next to Palolem and when I was there it was very laid back with just the right amount of people. A few dozen. I stayed with a family that had a few extra rooms for rent outside there house. Ask for a woman named Argentina, she will rent you her house for cheap, or she added a room next to her house when I was there. She's a nice widow who has 2 daughter's. She will also cook 4 u. She is located at the crossroad to the beach in Patnem. But don't worry , as there are many cheap and nice places to stay there. Don't forget to eat at the Udipi Restaurant in Chaudi (a few miles from Patnem). An easy walk. Excellent south indian food, and the best lassi's I had in Goa. It's always full of indian people so you know it's good. The north of Goa from my experience is more expensive then the south! Also Agonda is very laid back and nice and quiet! |

thanks for your responses casey and ananda2913. My greenness is showing here; i know nothing about goa, not the size nor the local scene, or any of the rest. about all is know is that there are beaches and a lot of westerners go there.
I am looking for a rather quiet place where i can write, that is more local than western or touristy. i want to hang out with locals and learn from them and spend some time on my own, on the beach or just hanging out, and then have a quiet room to retreat to where i'll feel inspired to work. |

Lotus Blossom: When I was in Goa in 2000 I stayed was at Anjuna beach in October. There was hardly anyone there at that time of the year, and many places were not open. I was often about the only one on the beach except for when they had the flea market. I was also on Vagator Beach and there was nobody around. Again, I am sure this was more due to being low season than anything else, and I enjoyed it all the more. The rest of the time I was in the city, which as I said, I really enjoyed. I am sure there are others on IM who spend a lot of time in Goa that can be of more help. If you go when it is not high season, you may find it to be more peaceful.

Sounds like the same place that I stayed at, it had regular rooms with private bathroom, 2 or 3 floors and a balcony going around the whole building. I think I was there early January and I doubt that that I paid as much as Rs300, that kind of money usually keeps me looking around, but I don't really remember.

Then I would recommend Agonda. It's one of my favorite beaches in Goa. It's a 3 km. long beach that very few people go to as it's a little hard to get to. You will have almost the whole beach to yourself. When I was there in 2003 from feb-may, I never saw more than 10 people there at a time.Thats pretty good for a 3 km. beach. There's about 7 places you can stay there. At the north end there is a place I would go to to have a drink after biking around. It's run by some local women. They had 3 hut's you could stay in when I was there. It's very quiet and peaceful. I think it was the farthest north place. But I don't remember the name. Just that it's by the small footbridge on the north side of the beach. On the south end up on a hill is the Sunset Restaurant and Hotel where there is an incredible view from the restaurant. A good place to have a drink, but their menu was very limited. Also you could stay there as they have rooms. But it's not on the beach. But if you decide to give Agonda a try. Just find a place temporarily, and wander around to find that special place that suits you. Good luck ![]() |
