Cash, travellers cheques, Cards

Im going to delhi and goa over xmas and planning on taking approx £300 in travellers cheques about 100 in pounds sterling and a visa/mastercard.

Is this the right combination?

I dont want to take £600 of travelllers cheques and have the hassle of changing them up. The last time I was in goa in 97 there where no atms now I hear that ATMs are all over calangute/north goa.

Thoughts please?

Anyone know what holidays Indian banks take over Christmas?

It is very easy to fall foul of Indian public hols when you want to change your TCs

I know 25th December is a Bank Holiday in India.

I think there's a list on the HCI London web site, but I'm on such a slow connection I won't look!

Given all the rest, I like the Annual Closing Day for Banks! Bit of a joke that, falls on 1 April too!

What's more... they get a half-yearly day as well!

I think you should have said go not work in a bank!!!

What you heard is correct. There are many ATMs in Calangute and plenty of money changers as well. You will get a better exchange rate while using an ATM.

Cyberhippie, many of the holidays in that list are restricted holidays not national holidays. The restricted holidays are confined to a particular state and in some cases to people of a specific religion. People working in a bank who follow that religion will be entitled to take the day off but the bank will be open for business.

The last 3 or 4 years I've taken a small amount of cash £'s to change & just used the ATM machines. I've also taken a Credit card as backup & used it to get cash advances at The Bank of Baroda in Calungute. Never bothered with Travellers Cheques.

We usually take a couplf of hundred in cash and use the atms in Candolim with no problem. There are more and more each year.

The other good bit is that they are inside their own booths, with the coldest A/C imaginable, so a great place to cool down if you're feeling a bit too hot
